I think that was before the whole Army went to black, so maybe they've changed since then. I'm pretty sure they don't all go through the Q course, and they certainly weren't raised out of SF (that was Blue Light) so I doubt they wear green. |

That looks green to me. At least Gordon on the right.

Maybe our monitors are on different settings . . .
Back to Airborne, anyone remember this old insert? YOJOE.COM | Operation Freedom It makes it pretty clear that Airborne is a paratrooper (at least for the purposes of this advertising gimmick). It also suggests he has a brother taken prisoner by Cobra (though there's also an internal inconsistency in that the prisoners are from a Joe recon team). Now that could have been an interesting storyline . . . |

Write it up.
Man I totally remember that insert. I think I had most of those guys, but I didn't have Rock'n'Roll. With Gordon and Shughart, both are former Green Berets right before Joining Delta. So why they would wear the black over the Green is beyond me. (THey were also former Rangers prior to Special Forces.)

I think as long as someone passes the Special Forces Qualification Course they can wear the Green Beret regardless of what unit they are in. However only members of the 75th Ranger Regiment are allowed to wear the tan beret. Maybe with Delta it is better to go incognito and wear a black beret (although at the time of that picture the 75th would have had the black beret instead of tan), that way they blend in. Incognito aside why would they choose the 75th beret over a Special Forces one (good question BTW)?

Here's two guys that won the Best Ranger competition in 2012. They appear to have the "Delta Force" beret flash, but one's wearing a tan beret and one's wearing a maroon beret.

That insert came out in 85, by which time there was a pretty good core of Joes. I can see a small recon team doing technical reconnaissance of an extraction field seized by Cobra, either with Airborne's brother along as a technical expert, or perhaps as one of the kidnapped workers . . . Though Hasbro missed an opportunity for this to be one of Flint's supposedly famous hostage rescues . . .

I guess they were giving people a chance to go back and catch up on missed characters.

Really? I get that you wear the tab wherever you go, but the beret too? I just figured that you wore whatever uniform (beret included) that your unit wore. Take Gen McChrystal, for example. He did the course and spent a stint with an A-Team as an Lt or junior captain. I'm pretty sure he never wore a green beret again for the rest of his career. But let's face it - how often do the Delta guys actually wear berets? I'm guessing it's maybe once every couple of years, and the rest of the time they wear ball caps or watch caps or hockey helmets.
I bet the Delta guys are too busy to be doing Best Ranger Competitions or walking around in uniform, especially if they are going full beard gearing up for an Afghanistan deployment. I bet these two guys are attached to USASOC headquarters doing training or recruiting.
