Flash has been giving me fits for awhile, like almost all the original 13 he has too many MOS's and trying to come up with a plausible career trajectory that would lead him to becoming a Joe has been tough, especially in trying to remain within the spirit of the filecards and other character bio information.
The best I could come up with is to drop or at least marginalize his CBRN background, this part of his career was never used much by Hama or any of the other writers as far as I can remember. To my mind, first and foremost he's a laser trooper, not a Chemical Reconnaissance Support guy or even a Signaler, he's a front line guy who just happens to be able to fix almost anything electronic in the field, so that's how I'm going to use him in my 'verse / fan fic. As for the SR/DA missions, John. My Sabre teams are kind of both. The SR missions they perform though, are short duration leading into a strike mission for the most part. I have a dedicated LRRP troop (Stalker, Recoil, Sneak Peek, Armadillo types) who perform longer term surveillance missions. They're attached to the Intelligence Squadron. So for example, one of the spy agencies gets intel that a Somali warlord has got his hands on some stolen hi-tech sniper rifles and is about to on-sell to Boko Haram, the Joes intel unit sends out a small team to land in-country and set up a forward monitoring base, someone like Chuckles and Lady Jaye will go in under Non-Official cover to rent cars, lease storage, apartments and things, whilst Stalker, Recoil and Sneak Peek infiltrate and surveil the area, try to get eyes on the weapons, scout the area for where best to land a Blackhawk or is it easier to lase the target and get a Drone to take out the Warlord's hideout. Since it's so close to civilians, they have to do a raid, so they spend some time watching, waiting, building up a pattern of life, basically 'Find and Fix' the target. A troop from one of the Sabre teams will conduct the raid and 'Finish' the target whilst Stalker's team either stays to observe, catch anyone trying to escape or anyone returning to the scene of the crime as it were to 'Exploit and Analyze'. Hope that makes sense? I keep going back and forth whether to have my Sabre Squadrons do both DA and SR or just DA with a separate Troop doing SR. My SR Joes would be: Claymore Stalker Recondo Gung-Ho Leatherneck Sneak Peek Outback Starduster Blocker Armadillo Recoil Pathfinder Dart Sgt. Boulder Desert Wolf Quote:
There are ways to rationalize multi-MOS characters like Flash. I have him enlisting in the military to work in electronics but gets the "needs of the Army" speech and gets sent to Chemical School. Bored and dissatisfied with the career field, he keeps his nose clean, doesn't complain and impresses his superiors with a solid work ethic, occasionally fixing some hardware and miscellaneous equipment for the unit's officers and NCOs. After a year and a half in the service, he sees an opportunity to change MOS when the Army's wartime expansion leaves the 94E field under-strength and he volunteers to reclassify. After 24 weeks of training at Fort Gordon he becomes a COMSEC equipment repairer, then passes the Ranger Assessment & Selection Program, and gets assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment. Another two and a half years later he completes Ranger School in anticipation of his promotion to sergeant and realizes that he wants to fight in the field and not from behind a workbench so he reclassifies again into 11B.
*Soldiers can usually reclassify after 12 months at their duty station and if their MOS is over strength and desired MOS is under strength. And some exceptions allow ranger-qualified personnel to reclassify regardless of MOS strength if they reclassify as 11B. Nice take on Flash! He definitely needs a lot of thought with all the various skills/MOS's that he possesses. I may make him a former Ranger instead of Special Forces if I ignore his "Communications Officer" filecard. I never even thought of associating him as a 29E for the Covert Electronics. That is an excellent idea! It looks like it is a non-entry level MOS so he would definitely have to enlist as a different MOS first. I will have to do some further reading on it as far as prerequisites. |

That's why I also chose not to use 29E. Plus it's mainly EW attack, protection, and support, so not much electronic repair. Also 94E covers the covert electronics aspect.

I have to admit I never gave Flash that much thought. I figured the least relevant point on his file card was the word "infantry," and used him instead as the guy who fixed anything electronic, built a Johnny 5 in his spare time, and who was the "go to" guy for bugs, laser microphones, remote sensing devices/booby traps.
I figure that a special force is really limiting itself if it mainly recruits from infantry units, since they don't bring much more to the team than you find in a decent parachute battalion. What makes a unit really special is the blend of high performers from completely different backgrounds, who can bring in high tech ideas, low tech ideas, and really off-the-wall ideas. For example, I can't think of any Joes who fit the bill, but imagine the kind of deception a team of magicians, stunt crews and film/theatre techs could pull off in support of an urban operations (Quick Kick, Scoop and Lady Jaye . . . and maybe Flash are as close as I can get) - be it a hostage rescue or a bank heist. If, on the other hand, you are made up exclusively of grunts then every op will be a variation of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Embassy_siege. So I wouldn't make him either a Ranger or a Green Beret. I'd make him a fit geek with a huge imagination, who discovered the way to get the coolest free workbench was to get into Joe. |

I also grew up with a sense of his prowess as a Sniper? I am not sure where that came from, but I assume from the Comics, where he was bullseyeing nanobots. Maybe his laser rangefinders are what makes him a good shot.
He and all the laser Guys and ECO-Warrior seem to fit well into a Support role. There must be a whole slew of real ARMY occupations that support SOF where they are given advanced infantry training due the potential to be close to the action and the units they support. I bet a lot of Joes in some of these less straight INfantry role fit in nicely. SOT-A, Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment, Any others? My Google-fu is failing me today. I can find something that tells me the units that require Ranger School Grads if only for TL and A/TL. Still I think the 75th has a lot of Support roles these integrated into the unit. I don't know if they have all gone through Ranger School, but I would guess they have a leg up getting their tabs. If nothing else a great proving ground for potential Joes. So here's my take on Flash. I came up with it, prior to the discussion between Loose and Tank about him being a 94E, so even as I'm posting this, I think I might revisit his bio anyway.
Flash was the kid who never fit in, even as his High School's track star (where he got the name 'Flash') and as a standout running back and later quarterback, he always felt more at home with his friends in the Math and Science Club than he did with his team mates. Strongly scouted his senior year, all hopes of a full-ride scholarship vanished after a knee injury. Enlisted in the Army after school, and reported to the Ordnance, Munitions & Electronics Maintenance School (OMEMS) in Redstone, AL. Assigned as a 91G Fire Control Repairer with the 82nd Support BN, 3rd BCT (ABN), he was cross-trained as a 91F Small Arms Artillery Repairer & 91K Armament Repairer in an innovative program designed to create cross-functional logisticians. Completed several Troop school courses (courses available at his duty station) including Unit Armorer Course, Unit Level Logistics System Course, and the CBRN Defense Course at Ft. Bragg to earn promotion points and stave off boredom. Also completed the Radiological Safety Course aka RADSAFE at Ft Leonard Wood, MO and served as his unit's Radiation Safety NCO. (Nod to his CBR quals) Finished his service with the 25th Support BN, 4th BCT (ABN) with the 25th Infantry Division in Alaska.Turned down a sizeable re-enlistment bonus to attend college and return to the warmth of California. Completed a semester in BSc in Electrical / Electronic Engineering at California State University at Chico, before winning a fellowship at MIT where he completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Electrical & Electronics Engineering / Computer Science. Worked in the private sector with LE Systems as a design engineer (LE created the Laser Dazzler) until a chance encounter with a few Green Berets sold him on the Warrior-Scholar ethos of the US Special Forces. Re-enlisted the next day under the 18X program and was assigned to the 1st SFGA as a junior Communications Sgt (Language proficiency in Japanese and Korean with some proficiency in Mandarin) where he served with distinction. Was on temporary assignment to the USSOCOM Program Executive Office (PEO) - SOF Warrior Systems (Munitions, Visual Augmentation, Lasers & Weapons) Handheld Laser Acquisition Marker / DEW Concentration when both Delta's Combat Development Directorate and the Joes came calling. Flagg himself wanted to take a look at the Whiz kid sniper qualified Communicator who could MacGuyver anything electronic in the field. (a nod to Joe Declassified) Chose the upstart Joes over Delta after the Joes first recruitment briefing where he met Grand Slam, Breaker and Short Fuze; Commando geniuses like himself and for the first time in his life - he fit right in. |

Thinking though I wouldn't have him hurt his knee, I would have him just choose not to bother with sports .. to a guy like what we see coming together here sports is a lame shallow pursuit compared to something like Joe or a pursuit of the mind, the frontiers of human understanding of technology. Just have him get bored with it and move on as a childish endeavor, which it kinda is. I always saw the Joes as all in peak condition and capability and a bum wheel would hamper that a lot.

If Flash was going to be a track star (and I can see the appeal leading to his codename), I actually see him doing one of the "weirder" sports, like discus or pole vault or race walking, so he wouldn't even fit in all that well with the rest of the team doing laps. In fact, race walking could lead to him getting the ironic name Flash!
