I remember the first Rattler appearance in the comics at Gen Flagg's funeral with a generic Cobra Pilot but it was a good look.
Other than that I don't remember Rattler pilots, then they moved onto the Night-Ravens and we got Strato-Vipers. I assume you originally were referring to the AVAC Filecards, since it stands for Air Viper Advanced Class. But where are the generic Air Vipers? A.V.A.C. (v1) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive The Cartoons usually just had a standard blueshirt with maybe a modified head gear, but the first Air Viper was the convention version. The subsequent versions are either Strato-Vipers or the AVAC recolored. 2009 was the year or the Air-Viper Air-Viper (v1) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive But I wonder what a Air Viper would wear? I like the look of Cobra Pilot as say the generic Air Viper, but maybe some uniformity with the Strato-Vipers or AVACs makes more sense. Cobra Pilot (v1) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive

It might depend on the air frame. If Air-Vipers v1 are the uniforms of the trainees, then qualified Air Vipers would be given particular uniforms when assigned their aircraft types. For Rattler pilots, I've always preferred the look of WW's uniform over the generic blue pilots, so his uniform is the standard in my verse.

I would love to see his outfit in Blue. I always figured the Red was meant for Squadron leaders or wing commanders. Like an AVAC or Wild Weasel.
Realistically though how many Firebats would there be? It doesn't even look like it could land, but I assume it can or should have some VTOL capability like most Cobra Aircrafts. I would guess AVACs can fly anything. Who is higher up the food chain AVACs or Strato-Vipers? Or non-existent Rattler pilots and Hurricane pilots. Where do Air-Viper Commandos fit in?

There's always the Brawler. It has two Surface to air missiles.
http://www.yojoe.com/images/resize/w...er_profile.jpg I thought of using the Warthog, as an AIFV, and discounted it for the reasons you mention. I never thought about using it strictly for the rockets. That may be an idea for a mission that involves amphibious assault and swimming ashore . . . |

There are two facts from the file cards that initially caused me to pause, and think. 1) I remember reading on at least one file card, for one of the many Cobra pilots, that the candidates were chosen from the best Air Vipers. Now, I will admit that I did not read a lot of the G.I. Joe comics as a child, and I have yet to read them all as an adult, but I did not remember seeing this character depicted in the comics, nor did I remember seeing this character depicted in the cartoon series. I always wondered where is this Air Viper that the file cards refer to. However, in 2003 the Air Viper was introduced to the toy line. 2) I always laughed at the fact that Rip It candidates were required to learn the game of golf as part of their training.

Generic Rattler pilots appear in the comic in #36 in the story where Torpedo and Snow Job investigate the tiny atoll where Cobra are based as the GI Jane does battle with Rattlers and the Flagg shows up at the end, after the Jane is sunk. They also appear in the creation of Cobra Island storyline (#40 and #41). Another appears in Yearbook 3 as the Oktober Guard and Cobra fight for control of the laser weapon.
Firebats are supposed to be standard issue as part of the Terrordromes, according to Serpy's sales pitch to the Sierra Gordo military dictatorship when the 'drome was finally named and established as mass-produced. He also states that they're VTOL, although one is seem landing conventionally at Springfield airport after flying their from Cobra Island on autopilot after being launched by Prof. Appel, carrying an unconscious Ripcord. So it seems there's as many Firebats as Terrordromes and Cobra were mass producing them and selling them to every two-bit dictator who'd buy them - they're seen in Sierra Gordo (only one), South-East Asia (location unknown, the Joes had some how lured out the Firebat and captured it before the story starts (SM #4), the Mid-East (Colonel Sharif's nation SM #14) and in large numbers in Frusenland in 'Cold Snap' (#68). I'd say going on the SM issue with Slipstream VS the Strato-Viper (#5) and the issue with the Joes' aircraft VS Cobra (SM #28), the line is Star-Viper -> Strato-Viper -> AVACs -> Rattler pilots/anyone else. The Star-Viper acts superior to the Strato. The Strato acts superior to everyone else. They're both augmented surgically, compared to the regular Cobra fly-boys. |

Information concerning the progression of Cobra troops, and the schools from which candidates are chosen is something that I have always found lacking throughout G.I. Joe media. This lack of information causes problems for my Cobra army building efforts. It does help to hear what other collectors know about the structure of Cobra forces, as well as, what others do to fill in the gaps.

Well hell that's what we end up talking about on this thread over and over. It is always fun to see everyone's perspectives. Lifeline_MD has one of the most comprehensive I have ever seen.
