Sort of off topic, sort of not . . . I'm tinkering with a story of a Joe armoured raiding force - something to do a quick penetration into an enemy's exposed flank. I'm looking for a double check of the layout, which kinda sorta aligns with some of the orbat discussions of the past. Here's what I've got:
Command Major Storm (CC/TF Commander) + Windchill (Gnr) + Hot Seat (Dvr) - Mauler Reconnaissance Rapid Fire (Recce Commander) - driving a Crossfire Rumbler - driving a Crossfire Crank Case - AWE Striker + Sneak Peak? Recoil? Zap? Assault Force Thunderwing (CC/ Assault Force Commander), Heavy Duty (Gnr), Rampage (Dvr) - Mauler Cold Front (CC/ fire control technician) + Back Stop (gnr) + Heavy Metal (Dvr) - Mauler Cross Country (CC) + Frostbite (Gnr) + Wild Card (Dvr) - Mauler Overwatch/Security Steeler (Overwatch Commander/TF XO)- Armadillo, towing twin battle gun (Rock n Roll) Cover Girl - Wolverine Clutch - VAMP + Rampart (passenger - Air Defence), towing Coastal Air Defender Skid Mark - Desert Fox; Backblast (passenger - for air defence) Short Fuze + Downtown - VAMP or a Desert Fox with 2 81mm mortars, or maybe towing a 120mm mortar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortie...Mod%C3%A8le_F1 Engineer Tollbooth driving the Bridgelayer, towing a MCLC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mine-clearing_line_charge Steam Roller driving an HMEV HMEV Backhoe Loader | Military-Today.com Support Recovery Vehicle - Dodger (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M88_Recovery_Vehicle) APC (Supply) - Armadillo (the guy, not the vehicle . . . Support Commander) + Barricade; towing a fuel bowser APC (Maintenance) - Bazooka + Dial Tone (Comms) + Tripwire; towing Road Pig (edit: that should be Road Toad!) APC - Ambulance- Sideswipe (Medic) + Stretcher (Medic) Can anyone think of characters I've missed who might be better suited to this kind of mission than those I have? Similarly with vehicles? I considered having them drive a mish mash of MOBATs and Maulers and HAVOCs and so on, and may go back to that, but I think a little homogeneity might be good, and plus find an opportunity to use a couple of lesser known vehicles/playsets. For the reconnaissance team, I'm undecided on the one dismount, whether he should be a pure recce guy or be able to do more specialised engineer reconnaissance. Suggestions and ideas are welcomed. A lot to take in.
I'm a little unsure of the maintenance team. Bazooka, Tripwire, Dial-Tone seems an odd group for maintenance but I am not sure the function. Cover-Girl and Clutch may be of use as mechanics? Other Motor vehicle guys: Rollbar, Cannonball, Long-Range (Garcia), and Blocker who is listed as Mechanized Recon. Knockdown may help with the Anti-aircraft role. What about some of the other Artillery guys if you needed more or extra gunners. (major Barrage, Thunder, Long-Range (Fritz), Sub-Zero since you have Arctic guys mixed in) Fast-Draw and Mirage Salvo? Mercer may be of use for your dismount guy? Rampage? The Spitfire driver/Beachhead lookalike? Quote:

Maybe switch out the Crossfires for a Badger and a Mudbuster? Then each vehicle gets a driver and a dismount and Rapid-Fire doesn't have to drive himself.
I forgot Sandstorm and Switch Gears. Switch Gears could take Rampage's place as driver. The Spitfire is sort of ridiculous but looks faster than the Hammer. You know what I like as a command vehicle is the Quick Strike. G.I. Joe Quickstrike w/ Sgt. Bazooka Quote:
I should rename that "maintenance" APC to "spare parts and tools" APC. I figure once the dust settles and any damaged vehicles have been dragged to safety then Dodger, Cover Girl and Clutch can get to work on the bodies and drive trains, Cold Front can work on damaged fire control systems, and Dial Tone can fix damaged radios.
Good ideas on alternate vehicles, and on Switch Gears, and there may be a place for Repeater as a gunner . . . I'll keep tinkering. Additional ideas are always welcome! Last edited by LowTech; 05-18-2016 at 02:27 PM.. |

Fun. I like how you included all those Action Backpacks. The only guy I don't love is Barricade. Maybe Blocker would work better? Or he could drive the Quickstrike. It has a double cockpit which I always love with Joe Vehicles.
My only other comment would be about the High Altitude Air Defense? Is the that 85 toy or the thing that came with Big Brawler? Either way it doesn't move. How about the Equalizer? THis is all of Joe's Armor so there is only 2 dozen seats for these guys to ride in which makes for only a small armor team. Perfect for something Recce, quick attack related. I look forward to any writing adventure you may undertake with this team.

I agree with Loose on using Blocker instead of Barricade.
Also (from a military rank perspective) would you want Sub-Zero (an officer) as a driver for Major Barrage? Maybe fill that position with an enlisted Joe? Looking through the Joe roster though doesn't give a lot in options unless you went with someone like Mirage or Hardball. |

I see what you are saying. The only driver I can think of still missing is Hardtop to replace Sub-Zero.

I forgot about Hardtop. He would be a good one to place on this team.

Ok how about Hardtop as the Fuel guy.
Steamroller as the Thunderclap driver. Tripwire as Bomb Disposal driver Nightfox as the Desert-Fox driver with Tunnel-Rat (especially since his SMS is EOD) And Blocker as the Equalizer driver.

That sounds like a solid lineup.
The only other thing I would change is the vehicle that Major Storm is using. Instead of a Mauler maybe something more of a Command and Control type of vehicle? He already has a team of Maulers to do direct-fire missions so he can be in the back lines utilizing all of the team's elements to wherever they are needed. |

The point air defence det could be two Equalizers (Steam Roller and Blocker driving), which would also free up Night Fox and Skid Mark for other driving tasks elsewhere. And I'm getting the hint on Barricade! Quote:

With the discussion of Equalizers I started looking at chassis. The Equalizer has a Mauler hull, which takes more fuel and maintenance than a Desert Fox, but at least has commonalities in parts and maintenance knowledge. Maybe it would make sense to swap out the Slugger for a Lynx, which is common hull with the Wolverine. But then that got me thinking about pushing all the indirect fire to the rear - have 2 Thunderclaps under Barrage, Thunder, Long Range, Sub Zero, Short Fuze and Downtown, and then have an ISTAR det with Flash and Breaker (EW/ signals intercepts), maybe in another Quickstrike; Grand Slam with the RPV; and Knockdown and Blaster with anti-air/counter-battery radars (say the Sky Sweeper and Coastal Defender). And maybe, just for the hell of it, I could include Rock n Roll on a motorcycle as a despatch rider! I'll tinker with another table . . . |

the Equalizer's an Air Defence Artillery vehicle. It's armed with SAMs, not SSMs.
if you want it to be mobile indirect fire, I'm just saying. The Armadillo mkII is more like an MLRS though. |
