I always thought Junkyard was a rottweiler, which doesn't really seem well suited for any of those roles. A shepherd (German or Belgian) or a Lab might make more sense, but then how many stories are there of people being taken down by Labs?
Spaniels seem to do well as bomb sniffers. Junkyard is no spaniel! That said, in one of the early ARAH comics when Mutt and Torpedo are poking through the Everglades, I'm pretty sure Mutt mentions that Junkyard can sniff explosives. |

Junkyard is a badass. But he's a mutt. He definitely looks too small to be a Rott. I just assumed he was a Rott/Pit mix. My dog is a rescue and I have no idea what he is. They said Dalmatian/Boxer. But that's what they say instead of Pit. Smart as hell though. About 70 lbs

Yeah, I've always thought that Junkyard was supposed to be a Labrador, not a "mutt"; but being the smart dog he is, he can pretty much do anything. I feel like he would do real well walking point with Mutt in the jungles after reading up on the Vietnam dogs. Interesting that they were used for "night missions" quite a bit. Both Low Light (a night expert) and Spirit (a tracker) were assigned to Slaughter's Marauders. Makes me wonder if they could all work together with an armor division? I definitely wouldn't have them as vehicle drivers (maybe the 1-seater Armadillo from Point A to Point B). Instead I'd fill the tanks with Green Shirts or Steel Brigadiers and have the Joe Marauders as infantry support.

Is that ever stated. I assumed Junkyard Dog, which is a mutt from the meanest dogs you can find. Although I would say at least 50% rottweiler.

I don't think I've ever seen anything definitive on Junkyard's breed. I was just making a guess from the figure/card art. Loose Cannon's probably right that he's a mix of mean breeds.
I'll point out (though most of you likely know this) that the code name "Mutt" is a diminutive of Stanley R. PerlMUTTer, Mutt's name on his file card. I'm just saying that because the word "mutt" gets a little confusing in this context as it can be applied to both dog and handler! |

Are Rottweilers used by the military? I just assumed Junkyard would be the standard breed used: a Labrador.

It's hard to say. In the comics he looks labish. In the cartoon, more Rottweiler with the brownish under color.

According to Wikipedia: "The US Army Labrador Retrievers received their combat training at the British Army's Jungle Warfare School in Malaysia." (Burnam, John C. MSG Retired. A Soldier's Best Friend; Scout Dogs and their Handlers in the Vietnam War. Sterling Publishing, NY, 2008. ISBN 978-1-4027-5447-0)
This jibes with Mutt's file-card. Wikipedia also notes that Labradors have been used for police, military, rescue and detection (arms & ammunition). So Junkyard, if a Lab, could be quite diverse in his own resume! Last edited by seaneley; 04-03-2016 at 08:57 PM.. |
