Flint also wears his jump wings on his right also. And he was formerly involved in helo-rescues, according to his file-card; probably in foreign territory.

Back to Mutt and Junkyard:
If Mutt is Jungle Warfare and Special Ops trained, how would that combine with Junkyard in the field? I understand security and prisoner control, but I can see Junkyard being used for tracking, explosives detection and drug detection. I guess what I'm asking is, if sent on a mission into the jungle, what would Mutt's primary task be? |

I don't treat Mutt like an MP. I would think tracking and a little bomb sniffing too. You know to smell Claymores and IEDs. Plus root out hidey-holes.
For Mutt? I don't know Recon/patrols? A little EOD? Point-man?

Wouldn't he be dedicated to dog-handling? He'd have to focus on the Junkyard's reactions, so wouldn't make a good point man (though it would make sense to have him close to point), and his hands would be too full to handle a heavy weapon. Just have him on the end of the leash, available to advise the patrol commander as needed.

Okay, let's delve even deeper. Mutt is assigned to several special teams. Some of the cards tell us what he does (thankfully):
DEF: obviously drug location Anti-Venom Task Force: tracking "venomized creatures" Other teams, I'm not so sure: Tiger Force: file-card says its "a mystery" Slaughter's Marauders: Mutt is dubbed a "utilization technician." I have no clue what that means! I tried Googling it. No luck! What does an armor unit need a dog handler for? Truth to tell, I don't know why Low Light, Footloose, Spirit and Barbeque are assigned to Slaughter's Marauders at all. None of them have any training with armored vehicles! At the best, they're infantry support while Sgt. Slaughter's vehicles are manned by experienced drivers. Any ideas about this? |

I can't stand Marauders, but love the vehicles.
I don't know how combat dogs were deployed in the jungles of Vietnam, which I am sure was the template for Mutt. I assumed something like patrols would go outside the fence with a dog. the Dog would probably be out front, hence my pointman comment. How special operator use war dogs today I don't know.

In Vietnam they had Scout Dog Platoons and Combat Tracker Teams. The scout dogs, mostly Labradors, were used to detect the enemy ahead of patrols and provide early warning. The tracker dogs, usually German Shepards, were used to track and find the enemy after they had broken contact.

Junkyard seems a bit of both. I would want him to be able to smell explosives as well.
A scout Patrol dog seems a great fit.

Yeah, I've always thought that Junkyard was supposed to be a Labrador, not a "mutt"; but being the smart dog he is, he can pretty much do anything. I feel like he would do real well walking point with Mutt in the jungles after reading up on the Vietnam dogs. Interesting that they were used for "night missions" quite a bit. Both Low Light (a night expert) and Spirit (a tracker) were assigned to Slaughter's Marauders. Makes me wonder if they could all work together with an armor division? I definitely wouldn't have them as vehicle drivers (maybe the 1-seater Armadillo from Point A to Point B). Instead I'd fill the tanks with Green Shirts or Steel Brigadiers and have the Joe Marauders as infantry support.
