I am also trying to make the case for him being a former Special Operations Forces Multi Purpose Canine operator. I am not sure on what MOS you have to be or anything. It seems in the past one had to be a Military Police MOS and then go on to K9 training (to be a Working Dog Handler). Mutt has an "Infantry" SMS so I wanted to maybe have him start out as an 11B then progress to a SOF dog handler without going through the MP MOS. Anyone have any more info on the SOF MultiPurpose Canine operator? When I do a Google search it brings up mainly MARSOC information. I wanted to see what the US Army does and the requirements to get into it and such.
The modern-day Special Operations Multipurpose Canine (MPC) Handlers are different depending on the service. As you've likely already found out for yourself, MARSOC MPC Canine handlers come from the USMC Military Police community. They have to get qualified as Special Operations Capabilities Specialists and attend basic and advanced Special Operations MPC handler training. In the 75th Ranger Regiment, the MPC unit falls under the purview of the regimental S-3 (or at least it was that way until at least 2007, I don't know if it's changed since then). The rangers who work with the dogs are infantrymen drawn from the ranger battalions. Like their MARSOC counterparts, though, they also attend basic and advanced Special Operations MPC handler training. I haven't come across any detailed and reliable public information regarding the MPC handlers who work with Army SF and the SEALs, but what bits I've picked up from news and feature articles seem to indicate that they follow the same general model as the 75th RR MPCs (that is, their MPC handlers come from within the SF and SEAL community, respectively). Thanks for the answers everyone! Tyroc, good find on Mutt's 2004 filecard! I guess I didn't dig much deeper than his first two fielcards.
I had known about the 31K MOS but I also know it is more of a recent MOS so I figured Mutt would have been a 31B first and got the MWD training later (in my Joe-verse he enlisted in either the late 90's or early 2000's so 31K would not be an option for him). Zulu great information on MWD's. His first filecard never made it seem that Mutt was an MP so was trying to develop a backstory for him that made him more SOF than just an MP MWD handler. |

The toy itself looks very much like it was intended to be an MP dog handler (although the original design draft for the figure that became Mutt was actually for a Cobra character, believe it or not), what with the retro-looking MP baton accessory and the bite sleeve on the figure's left forearm. The filecard, as we've established, seems to be written for a Vietnam War-era CTT tracking dog handler, though (if it's not too crass, here's a link to an article I wrote a few years ago that has images of a CTT as depicted by the late, great comics legend Will Eisner). How much action do ALO get? I have been using Countdown as my ALO (ROC Rollbar) since I have no use for Astronauts, but Skystriker being a Lt. Colonel makes a great fit. Plus he's listed as COmbat Tactician on his filecard, which fits in with a Headquarters position.

This discussion about Mutt needs to be put into context. He's a figure released in 1984 - that's 32 years ago, and he was created by guys whose most significant exposure to war was Vietnam. SOF didn't come out of that war with a great reputation, and didn't enhance their reputation in the Iran debacle or Grenada. They had a reputation (whether deserved or not) for doing things off the cuff and disregarding regulations. My understanding is that there also weren't nearly as many specialized occupations. So back in that era he could have just been a guy who'd spent his whole life around dogs, did some fringe courses, and liked the idea of following a Burt Reynolds grooming standard. If he were to be recreated today for a 2016 context his backstory would be very different . . . probably it would be more rigid in career history, and he'd likely never have seen a jungle.
On a different note, is there a single on-line source capturing the development of characters and the differences in ideas that Hama and Rudat (or others) had? I'd heard about the Low Light story, but not the others. |

Not that I know of. Most of the behind-the-scenes stuff trivia about the discrepancies between the design intent and the filecard information that I know, I picked up from the 2nd edition of Mark Bellomo's The Ultimate Guide to GI Joe: 1982–1994 (most of his info in this regard is sourced from firsthand interviews with Rudat and Hama).

I agree with Z about Mutt's character being derived from the old Combat Tracker Team. In fact, it makes him and Spirit, a tracker, the perfect pairing.
