SEALs used to have O-3s for TL and O-2s for ATL. I don't know what the breakdown is with the bigger 21-man platoons with 3 officers.

Platoon Leader (O3) Asst Plt Leader (02) Asst Plt Leader (01-02) Platoon Chief Lead Petty Officer Asst Lead Petty Officer Other Ranks as normal So they can split into x 3 7 man sections. I'm trying to track down the exact source but pretty sure that's what I read. |

I read in Tip of the Spear or SEAL Ethos Magazine that a SEAL platoon is the same as the old 14 man platoon just with another half platoon added so
Platoon Leader (O3) Asst Plt Leader (02) Asst Plt Leader (01-02) Platoon Chief Lead Petty Officer Asst Lead Petty Officer Other Ranks as normal So they can split into x 3 7 man sections. I'm trying to track down the exact source but pretty sure that's what I read.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for the incredible work you have done over the years. This thread and your work were the reasons I came back to post on this site. It took me months to read every post in this thread and your concept art thread but was definitely worth it in the end.

In the paper, he describes the SEAL platoon as being led by an experienced O-3 who is assisted by a junior officer who can range in grade from O-1 to O-3 (obviously, this second O-3 would be junior to the lead O-3 in terms of time-in-grade). Anyway, I decided to make O-3 a hard requirement for the assistant team leader position in the notional Joint Special Operations Team structure, the reasoning being that a unit like GI Joe (which I propose resides in the same rarefied air as other Tier 1 organizations) would prefer to have mature individuals in critical leadership positions, while still allowing for the mentorship relationship that is implicitly involved when you've got a senior officer being assisted by a junior officer. Getting new blood is important, of course, but I think that has to be balanced against the need for experienced operators. I imagine that this O-3 requirement could be waived on a case-by-case basis, though, like say, if you've got an O-2E applying for the assistant team leader position. Actually, now that I think about it, making the billet paygrade for the assistant team leader range from O-2E to O-3 actually makes a lot of sense within the context of how I'm imagining the thing. I knew posting here to bounce ideas off you guys was going to help!

In regards to a 14-man platoon would using split teams of seven men each be ideal for situations such as room clearing? The SAS uses 4-man patrols whilst Delta apparently uses 6-man assault teams so was wondering if the Marines had a justification in using a 7-man team? Or does the command element stay back while the rest of the platoon does the room clearing?

An assault team can have as little as 4 to as many as 12 men. Not including sniper elements. SEALS may use a 6-man, 7-man, 8-man, or 10-man stack for VBSS. At minimum there's a Point Man, Breacher, and 4 assaulters in the short stack.
