Taking a look through that list of guys with medical skills, here's roughly what I see:
Aid-post/surgery: Doc, Carla, Jane, Lifeline (X-Ray tech), Link Talbot (dogs and assorted pets). Stalker & Falcon are commanders so would rarely be employed as medics. Spirit, Sidetrack, Blast Off, Hard Drive - secondary roles as medics. Inferno & Barbecue - flight-line/QRF medics (along with jaws of life cutting tools) Barrel-Roll and Airborne (Six): specialists in high-altitude parachute-related medicine. Ice-Storm: specialist in extreme cold; diving; mountaineering medicine Med Alert & Stretcher & Sideswipe [thanks to LC below for noting the omission): insufficient detail to determine if they'd have any specialized training. Definitely hit the nail on the head in regards to Stalker and Falcon, they would be commanding troops, not providing medical care (unless things got really sticky and they needed a backup medic). Med Alert, Stretcher and Sideswipe are tough ones. I did make both Stretcher and Sideswipe 68W Healthcare Specialists (combat medics) in my Joe-verse. Not sure on Med Alert, either a 68W or an 18D SF Medical Sergeant. Does anyone know of any source material that might help swing it either way (comics and such)? |

Med Alert seems the least Special out of all Joes. I think he's a pacifist too. He has never appeared in anything.

Agree with your assessment. I do deviate though and make Link a SEAL medic and do away with the whole veterinary thing. It does not fit my Joe-verse.

He appears to be a more aggressive version of Lifeline. He uses Tai Chi; instead of, aikido.

going back to mountiaineering, in #23 of the Marvel run, Clutch and Cover Girl freeclimb a maountain side. Cover Girl notes it'd be easier with gear, whilst Clutch replies it's the easy side and Snow Job climbed the harder slope. Seems to imply at least basic mountaineering skills for everyone in the Joes.

Oh yeah . . . free climbing in high heeled boots . . . and then Clutch drives the Vamp down the side of a cliff . . .
Elsewhere (38/39), Stalker, Recondo, Roadblock and Gung Ho do some cliff work to rescue Dr Burkhart (again) (a story that borrows from this: CMOHS.org - Lieutenant, Junior Grade KERREY, JOSEPH R., U.S. Navy), and in Special Missions 2 Alpine, Snow Job, Breaker and Airtight do some ice climbing on a glacier, so yeah, they can probably all climb a bit. Climbing isn't the hardest thing to learn, and with some practice most can become decent climbers. But lead climbing is another skill altogether. So I'd probably lump this in with basic para and basic dive. Everyone knows enough to not look stupid, and probably refreshes skills from time to time (the premise for Scarlett being captured and held in Destro's castle in the Silent Issue was that she was snatched while doing her yearly qualification jump (or so Grunt says in issue 22), which has an inconsistency in that she free fall jumped (in what looked like a low altitude low opening jump) into Sierra Gordo in 13 (and was ski jumping in issue 9 . . . that may be more of a hobby than a special forces skill and is completely irrelevant), and apparently MFF requires a 180-day currency (SP-080822-01 Military Free Fall team makes own history), but I digress!). So sure, I'd buy that everyone can figure their way up and down a vertical obstacle. Last edited by LowTech; 03-16-2016 at 01:15 PM.. |

I always saw the eels and Vipers as two separate competing paths of advancement, then the CGs being cross trained in both, with advanced degrees and sort of like the Cobra SS.
When it then gets REALLY confusing is when you have things obviously in either the Viper or Eels advancement paths yet they have a name suggesting the other like Ice Viper ( should be a Snow Serpent officer BUT that also exists) and the naming disparity for the para viper being an eel. in universe I just explain it as Cobra being purposely deceptive and convoluted for "Op Sec'... sort of like our Military has ALWAYS done lol. There needs to be a modern Sea Slug, I like that guy |

I think of the EELS and Snow Serpents as SOF units conducting special recon, raids, and other missions. So I don't have an issue with making them EELS with advanced Arctic warfare skills.
Vipers, I figure, can train to operate in all environments but there are special operators like Sand Scorpions who are the best of the best in those environments. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 03-16-2016 at 06:29 PM.. |

I agree about the Eels and Snow Serpents being SOF type of units. I like to think of the Eels as the equivalent of SEAL's with the Snow Serpents being more like Seal Team 2(?), which specializes in cold weather operations.
Para-Vipers can be certain Eels that specialize in HALO/HAHO operations. Just like not all SEALs are MFF-qualified maybe all Eels are not as well, hence the Para-Vipers. So if Eels are SOF naval troops then what would a standard Cobra naval troop look like? Certainly they need standard sailors to man ships and such. |

I think there's no way Cobra could have a standing Navy because there's no where they could hide it. But a fleet of submarines on the other hand... That's really all the EELS need for infiltration.
