I think it depends on how your own Joe-verse is structured.
Honestly I do not know where to place them in mine. My Joe team is more SAS/Delta like and doesn't use tanks, artillery and jets. According to Fast Draw's filecard he was a clerk typist (a Support Branch) then Ordnance (which I take to mean an 89B Ammunition Specialist, also part of the Support Branch). He is not really on the front lines. Does he handle the Joes ammunition (which means he sits back at base a lot) or (if the Joes are like the SAS/Delta) go through the "Joe Operator Course" and is now a Trooper/Operator who engages in direct action raids and such? If so he probably would not be packing anti-tank weapons and would instead be using an M4 or a HK416. Backblast is another tough one. I put him as a former 14S Air and Missile Defense Crewmember. From what I have gathered online they employ the Avenger Air Defense System and typically don't run around with a Stinger missile launcher in their hands. So again does he go through the "Joe Operator Course" and become a Trooper/Operator? Or if your Joe-verse is more like the comics and such (artillery, tanks and jets) then maybe manning one of the Joe anti-aircraft vehicles? |

I would say that the FLAK and Mountain Howitzer would need a minimum of two to operate, a loader and a firer. The Thunderclap being so huge, probably needs at least three to operate properly, unless it's heavily computerised. The Slugger probably needs at least two as well.

I look at Backblast as one of the more combat ready Joes. He is also Signal Corps. And his Version Two filecard references Recon, Jungle ops and running Marathons.
I have Backblast as part of my Mobility Troop - Artillery Team. Fast Draw is part of my Special Weapons Force - Engineering team.

There's no reason why the MOBAT couldn't have an autoloader. Lots of tanks have them.
Auto-loaders in land-based artillery systems are rare (I'm actually not aware of any), but they're common in naval guns, so I don't see why one couldn't be adapted. It's not sci-fi at all. As for artillery crews, they're usually pretty big per gun (the M109 self-propelled howitzer has a crew of 6; the M777 towed howitzer has a crew of 7). But it takes more than just the gun crew - there's also a CP crew to do survey, prioritize fire missions, plot the missions and do all the math involved in making sure corrections are done right. Plus you'd probably want some trucks carrying ammunition so you need drivers, mechanics to make sure everything is working smoothly (including the autoloaders) . . . artillery units are big for a reason. |

Even the towed 105-mm M119 has a crew of seven: 2 canoneers, a gunner, assistant gunner, section chief, ammo chief, and prime mover driver. |

I figure Joes would combine many of those rolls. Although I don't know the difference between a Cannoneer and a Gunner. Do they need the other three roles filled by more individuals? Someone like SHortfuze is supposed to be so good at putting it on the target he wouldn't need a survey crew or a section chief. It's all him and his job is to come up with it on the fly.
Obviously you wouldn't want Downtown driving a VAMP trhough enemy territory with a Mountain Howitzer in Tow by himself. Just for security reasons alone. But I bet he could? Might take him a minute to set up.

Short Fuze and Downtown are on my Weapons Squad with Zap, Bazooka & Salvo. Probably where Backblast and Fast Draw will end up if I use them at all.

the MOBAT had a three-man crew in the early comics, I'd guess that's driver, gunner, commander, suggesting an auto-loader. The Mauler was the same, i think.

Might take him a minute to set up. As for a towed howitzer, those are heavy beasts and require a team just to get them in position. I guess one massive guy could, with lots of effort and the help of a wich and a jack, unhitch one and set it up. It would take a while longer to calculate traverse and elevation and apply that to the gun. Then he'd have to set the right fuses and charges. Then he'd have to load. Then double check the gun. Then fire. Then get another round, prep it, load it, confirm corrections to traverse and elevation, apply them, fire . . . Doable . . . but in the time it takes to do that a trained crew could have fired off a dozen rounds, moved to a new location, and be firing a second mission. If a special forces unit is doing a raid and thinks it will need some quick, local fire support, it makes sense to dedicate a team to a couple of mortars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Pebble_Island being an example). Otherwise, it makes more sense to have a conventional artillery unit/naval gunfire support/close air support lined up to provide fire support. The Joe artillery pieces make sense from a sales-for-Hasbro perspective, but make little sense from a force employment perspective. |
