Great ideas CapBritain!
Random thought: while being qualified "all NATO and Warsaw Pact" small arms, or explosive devices, or whatever made sense in the '80's, is it still relevant today? The Warsaw Pact was dissolved in 1991 . . . that's 25 years ago. There are a lot of soldiers today born AFTER the end of the WP. Also, some old WP nations are now NATO nations but still use small arms like AKs, RPK, PKMs and so on, so technically those ARE now NATO small arms. Any thoughts on a more appropriate term? Maybe, with the proliferation of manufacturing beyond the old WP, something more regional might work, like "weapons of Eastern European or Pacific Rim or South American manufacturing." |

There are Foreign Weapons courses taught but that's the only term I hear.

these guys are supposed to be from the early '90s, so WP would still be slightly relevant.

I also would think Dune Runner and Sand Panther would just be Infantry. The Army and Marine Corps don't have a Desert Warfare MOS. They just send units to train in the desert before they deploy to a desert AOR.

My question would be how many guys outside of Special Forces weapon sergeants or the occasional armorer would actually be required to be familiar with all those weapons. much less qualify expert on them? I could see special operations guys learning the basics of the AK, RPK and Dragunov, but that would probably be a last ditch "caught behind enemy lines, run out of ammo" contingency measure.

Sand Panther might have got hold of, and qualified on, WarPac weapons during his time in the Mid East during Desert Storm. Either captured examples from the Iraqi forces or examples from Coalition partner nations who used them.
Desert Warfare's their PMS in GI Joe, which has different PMSs to the regular forces. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :P |

On the topic of organization, I've noticed that everyone automatically assumes that Joe is a stand-alone unit. It struck me recently that Joe could also be a subordinate squadron of Delta. Considering the timing of the release of Joe in the early '80's, say Delta was expanding and creating a dedicated reconnaissance squadron (the precursor to an Advance Force Operations unit, or similar to ST6's Black Squadron). It would be primarily Army based, but with a couple of pers seconded from other branches. There are some points for and against this idea.
For: being a Sqn vice a Regiment reduces the need for so many senior officers and NCOs. Against: An AFO usually has senior pers to start with and tends to be fairly rank-heavy. For: An AFO requires pers with a broad range of language capabilities, which are there in Joe. Against: An AFO has little need for lots of armoured vehicles Anyway, it's an idea. |
