Great links! But re-reading the Grunt dossier raises a question or two, particularly about Stalker's peer assessment of him. Grunt comes across as a guy who can perform when he has to, but lacks the initiative and drive to either excel in Ranger School or even volunteer for it in the firs place (depending on how you read it). That may be a solid troop in a conventional rifle squad, but not the type of guy to end up in a unit like Joe. It's very different from what made his file card: "Grunt is a highly motivated, systematic individual . . ."
While I frame Joe as having fewer troops entering via the green beret stream, Spirit is one who I can see coming in that route, either as a medical sergeant or as a weapons sergeant (based on his sniper training). But then the weapons sergeant specialty is, as noted above, overdone. If you want to mix in a little windtalker history (especially as Spirit could either be a Navajo or a Pueblo) he could be a comms sergeant. In Recondo's case I think it would have to be "and," not "or," as I believe (according to this: Special Forces Assistant Ops & Intelligence Sgt. (MOS 18F)) that you can only become an intelligence sergeant after doing one of the "entry" SF specialties. And given, yet again, the talk of weapons sergeants, here's a thought: make him a comms sergeant. In Marvel's ARAH he was sent into Sierra Gordo alone. He'd need a pretty good knowledge in rigging antennae to conduct long-range comms from mountainous jungle (a terrible comms environment) to the continental USA, and all the challenges of relocating and re-rigging to adapt for changing atmospheric and tactical situations. On a different note, Happy New Year to all of you! Those are great 18 series MOS's for Spirit and Recondo! I definitely agree there are too many SF Weapons Sergeant potentials in the Joe-verse. I did know that Intelligence Sergeants needed to start out as one of the four entry series 18 series MOS's (B, C, D or E). I am assuming it works that way in regards to becoming a SF Warrant Officer as well (to explain Flint's progression). Also from my understanding Sniper School is open to any 18 series so Spirit could still technically be an 18D with sniper training. Happy New Year everyone! |

Happy New Year!
I forgot about your Fanfic. I started reading it a few weeks ago. You have written a ton! I mentioned this in the Issue #222 preview posts, that about the only thing good which I hope happens with CWO is the Joes might get some new pilots from other services. I am wondering if you got any inspiration from there for Steel Raptors. Currystan, and Banana Split cracked me up.

No, I can safely say I have taken no inspiration at all from anything Hama's done, because I'm not reading the comics. The only Joe comics I've read other than the classic stuff is the con comics and the two issues where Hama used the Red Shadows.
having Navy or Marine aviators in the Joes is just something I've thought should've happened for about 15 years since I found out about the fact that 'Action Force' were all Americans except for Big Ben, Skymate and a couple of others. (I knew AF was called GI Joe in the US, thanks to some letters in the MUK weekly comic, I just didn't realise they were all Americans) The names were deliberately goofy to make sure people realised they were fictional, in-universe, since there are several 'real' nations that don't exist in our world. |

39 stories in 6 continuities.
Action Force: Regeneration continuity - a reboot set in 2010/2011 1. Action Force part 1: Formation, part 2: Selection, part 3: Confrontation (one story in three 'acts') 2. Action Force 2: Escalation 3. Action Force: Infiltration (a short 'spin-off' story) 4. Action Force 3: Devastation Action Man continuity - a reboot set in 2010 Action Man: The Greatest Hero of Them All Action Man 2: Attack of the Skull-men Action Man 3: The Fall of Doctor X Black Sword continuity - a GI Joe reboot set in 'the present', using all-realistic stuff and centred on a UKSF unit Black Sword (3 parts) 'Combined Universe' - follows on from Marvel US, Marvel UK and Battle Action Force comics featuring GI Joe, Action Force et al. see the 29 stories on the site. Joe Canuck - a one-off story for a competition they had, which didn't fit anything else and based on a false assumption I made. Codename: Aurora - a new story for the same competition. Doesn't really fit with anything else. |

The sound of a Harley coming to a stop at the end of his lane caused Lance Steinberg to glance up from under the hood of the '68 GTO he was restoring. Craig McConnel swung his leg over the saddle and walked up the lane, fishing papers from his shirt. "Sumsbitchs gonna move me to Bravo Coy." Lance rocked back on his heels and started wiping his hands on a rag. "Gets worse," McConnel continued. "I'm losing my 60 and going into a rifle platoon." "Whose?" "Sneedon's." Lance winced. "That dude's too hoowah even for the 75th," grumbled McConnel. "But at least I'll have good company." Steinberg frowned as McConnel fished into his shirt for another document. "The clerk gave me you papers too. You're joining me." Steinberg scanned the orders and started swearing. He stepped into the garage, opened the small bar fridge and pulled a pair of beers, knocking the caps off against the edge of the workbench. He handed one to McConnel and took a long pull. He drained the bottle on his second swallow, opened the fridge and pulled out a third beer. "There's gotta be a way to avoid that psycho," Steinberg mused. McConnel nodded. "I've been thinking about that. You remember a few weeks ago when that dark green former Ranger showed up. Wilkinson, I think his name was." "Yeah," nodded Steinberg. "Snakey kinda guy. Looked like he'd gone native one too many times." "Well, I know he had a couple of conversations with the Command Sergeant Major, and I know he spent a couple of days with one of the SF battalions going through pers jackets." "So?" "I think he's looking for candidates for a special unit. Applying to try out can't be any worse than Sneedon, and maybe if we're gone a while they'll find someone else for Mr Ranger's platoon. I can go back to a weapons squad and you can go back to the jeeps." Steinberg read through the orders one more time and finished his second beer. He glanced at his tools on the lane and stared into the distance. "It's not a good plan," he said quietly, scratching his head with a toothpick, "but under the circumstances . . . yeah. I'm in" |

^^^^ Do you write fanfics LowTech?
I know someone mentioned that they didn't think that some of the Joes should start in Combat Support MOS's then move to Combat Arms. However after re-reading the book "Roughneck Nine One" (where one of the soldiers started as an 88H Cargo Specialist before moving over to an 18 SF soldier) and reading several of the obituaries of fallen SOF soldiers that Loose Cannon provided I am thinking it is more common than not. I believe in one of the obituaries a soldier started out as repairing helicopter engines before moving to Infantry and then SF. Guess I am going to have to rethink my Joes again. lol |

Guess I am going to have to rethink my Joes again. lol Here's a thought on MOS' and which ones are/aren't appropriate for Joes at the start of their careers: How many SEALS start their careers in the infantry? None. How does that affect their combat performance? I leave that to each of you to assess. My point is that contact drills, patrolling, raiding and so on can all be taught to anyone. In fact, it's easier to teach those skills than it is to teach some of the more esoteric mechanical/technical skills. So if someone makes it through selection having already been trained to fix helicopter engines or rebuild weapons or manage a warehouse or use heavy equipment or whatever, then they bring something very valuable to the team. |

I completely agree, Lowtech. The only reclassification, however, that I thought might seem implausible was going from 13F to 11B for Grunt. Granted, 13F is probably a low-demand MOS compared to 11B due to fewer positions, but it's such a more substantial and more challenging and thus more rewarding career track, that I couldn't see someone giving it up to be a grunt, but it's not impossible. I wish Hama had addressed that bit in his early notes.

no one in the SEALs starts as infantry because you can enlist straight into the SEALs!
