I agree. I always thought Falcon was more of a badass then he was made out to be. Especially with his background, being a Green Beret.
The cartoon was horrible, there's no way a guy like that would have made LT or even made the Joe team to begin with. That kind of attitude and such would have had him discharged awhile ago. |

Yeah, there's no such thing as a Green Beret "screw up".
I never understood why Falcon was used. His officership was never a story point (except that one line where he told Duke he outranked him). Crazylegs, Sneak Peek (both came out the same year as Falcon, Jinx, Law, Tunnel Rat) could have worked in the same role.

I read somewhere that Duke was originally supposed to die. I think the idea was to make Falcon the new "Duke" for the show after the movie.

That's true, but besides Firefly/STorm Shadow/Bludd and Zartan (the Twins were always more businessmen then soldiers), the rest of the named Cobras were never shown to be that elite. At least until Phoenix Guard.
I wasn't surprised, but it was kind of cool to see Scrap-Iron as more of a tech guy then just a guy with a missile launcher. Wild Weasel was always shown as a great pilot, but to see him as more then just an air jockey. And Copperhead, before that, was just a boat driver. So the Phoenix Guard showed these guys as being capable of being elite and going toe-to-toe with the Joes. Just took alot of years for that potential to be shown. And yeah, it should have always been there. YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Tomax & Xamot French Foreign legion is no joke. They see as much action as anyone. I figured the Twins and Wild Weasel and Maj Bludd may have had some interactions with each other in the 70's when some of these african Countries were still not independent. Like Angola, Rhodesia, Mozambique. That to me would have been where Cobra would have gotten a lot of recruits. Guys that went to Africa to be Mercenaries, and like war. |

Thanks for the good words, man. And I agree about kind of having mixed feelings about the Joes being based on reality. Even as a kid, I thought it was great that the team had its roots in Vietnam, but it does date the characters. So I guess a reboot is the best way to handle it.
And speaking of Falcon, I've always thought he was a great character with alot of potential that was ultimately wasted. The comic portrayed him well enough but the cartoon really screwed him up. Based on his filecard, he seemed like he was cut from the same cloth as guys like Hawk, Duke, Flint, and Stalker. A good soldier and a good leader. And as a young officer, it felt like he should have been groomed to lead the whole team someday. I think that he was meant to be the new "Leader" figure for the '87 line of toys. Unfortunately, the movie used him as a central character in completely the wrong way. Then the cartoon series went on hiatus until about 1990, when Captain Grid-Iron became Hasbro's new "Leader" figure, and Falcon was sort of mothballed as the new leader. Falcon was sort of swindled out of being developed as a character into all he could/should have been. But let's look at his qualifications... 1. Combat Officer... the first Green Beret Officer since Joe Colton - which means he's an Airborne Ranger qualified soldier. 2. Named for a bird of prey, like Hawk 3. Special Forces like Flint (wears a beret)... even mentions "Blue Light Group" which was code for Delta Force. 4. Hasbro gives him command of 2 Special Operations units: Night Force and Super Sonic Fighters. Super Sonic Fighters is not so great, but Night Force maybe the best Spec. Ops Team Hasbro ever made. All in all, I think Falcon is one of the best characters Hasbro ever made. In my opinion, I consider him right up there with Duke, Flint, Claymore, and Stalker as one of the most highly trained and well rounded Joes on the team.

Crazylegs, Sneak Peek (both came out the same year as Falcon, Jinx, Law, Tunnel Rat) could have worked in the same role. The movie could have been a great opportunity to tell a much different story. Chuckles could have been used much better in a great spy story or something as a subplot. Falcon could have been recruited from SF by Flint or something. Tunnel Rat could have been used much more effectively. There is just so much about the movie that I didn't care for... and don't get me started on Cobra-La.

I always thought the French Foreign Legion was just like a step below Cobra on the Crazy scale... Criminals from all over the world Join the Foreign Legion, and desertion is very commonplace within it's ranks. It's brutal training, and made up of weirdos, criminals and psychos. The Cobra Twins, Major Bludd, and Zartan all have ties to the Foreign Legion.

In my revised Joe-verse, which I'm still fleshing out, in stories and such, he's one of the 3 squad leaders (Falcon, Flint and Duke).
