Yeah I don't know how to play out the Oktober Guard as cooperating with the Joes in some sort of Joint task force. Usually we see them at odds and then having to join forces when they are forced to take on Cobra. Only to bide their time to reverse the cooperation to fulfill their main objective. With the Russians there is always an ulterior motive.
For me I was just trying to keep my somewhat tidy, 6 squadron set up of 65 men or so. I didn't feel like they would work as well broken up into the other teams, and naturally they seem to fit in the Arctic environments. I guess if they somehow joined up in the War on Terror, this type of cooperative effort could happen however unlikely that is. You just have to suspend disbelief.

I thought I'd share my Troop structure with you guys. I have 2 Joe verses. One is simply the named Joes, no outside sources (COPS, Bronze Bombers, etc) and the other I call my expanded 'verse where I use custom characters etc.
The following is my Mountain / Arctic Assault Troop from the simplified verse. Each 20 man Troop is divided into 5 Four man sections; HQ Section, x 2 Assault Sections, a Maneuver Support Section (Machine Gunners, Anti-Tank) and a Recce / Sniper. Each section can operate independently but when operating as a single troop (Raids, DA Missions) similar to a Platoon. HQ Section Troop Commander - MAJ Sub Zero Troop SGT - OR8 Big Ben Communications Chief - GYSGT Dee-Jay (Made him a Marine) Medical Chief - HMC Boulder (Made him a SARC) Assault Section 1 Section Leader / Mountain Leader - SFC Blizzard Communicator / Joint Fires Observer - SSG Hit n Run Breacher / OSV OPR - SSG Windchill I Master Mariner / Arctic Medic - HM1 (SWCC) Ice Storm II (Need a new name) Assault Section 2 Section / Mountain Leader - SFC Alpine Demolitions / Tactical Coxswain - SSGT Ice Storm I (MARSOC Raider) OSV OPR / Mechanic - SSG Frostbite Radio OPR / Raven OPR - ITC1 (SEAL) Risco (also Dive Supervisor) Maneuver Support Section Section Leader - SFC Iceberg OSV OPR / ADA Spec - SSG Avalanche (also Combat Tracker) HVY Weapons Spec - SSG Snow Storm HVY Weapons Spec - SSG Cold Front (also Pack Animal Pack Master) Recce / Sniper Section Master Sniper - SFC Snow Job Sniper / Pathfinder - SSGT Red Mack (also Mountain Medical Spec) SR Sniper - SSG White Out Sniper / Arctic Medic - SSG Windchill II (Chill Blaine) OSV OPR - Oversnow Vehicle Operator Master Mariner - Select team of Special Boat Operators (4 in a team) who are trained to operate all kinds of Civilian Vessels Love to know what the rest of you think |

That is as good as it gets. Who is RISCO?
How about Storm Front just to completely mix all the characters up?

Risco is the Argentinian version of Alpine. http://www.yojoe.com/international/a...arg-risco2.jpg I using any foreign variants as long as they have a different file name and are separate characters, at least that's the plan in the simplified verse. In my expanded 'verse, anything goes |

In my fanfic, I'm using the Guard as a Russian equivalent to the Joes. Since most of the stories are post '91, they're mostly Russians, plus Daina and a couple of Ukrainians. I've significantly increased their roster, largely just giving the characters Russian first names. If anyone's interested, I'll post the personnel list.
In my collection, Red Star, Volga, Big Bear, Gorky and Dragonsky are just in my GI Joe team alongside the Joes. Volga as Wild Bill's co-pilot, Big Bear and Red Star in the fire-support unit, Gorky in the infantry and Dragonsky in the special weapons team with Blowtorch, Flash, Sci-Fi and Charbroil. |

That's a good idea especially if you get say Alpine and UPS Alpine with the shorts. They look different enough.
I do a bunch of straight renames to create characters from duplicate figures, as long as they look different enough or do a headswap. For example I use Retaliation Lady Jaye as Mayday, or Urban Assault Duke from POC with a Steeler head for Mariner. Convention Tiger Force Stalker is now Triton (Brazilian Stalker). Black Repeater from the Toys'r'us 5 pack is now Hardball.

Daina - Helicopter pilot/sniper (Czech)
Red Star - 2IC/machine gunner (Ukrainian) Big Bear - anti-armour Dragonsky - flamethrowers Lt. Gorky - Marine Sgt. Misha - infantry General Iron Bear - CO Wong - Marksman (Asian) Ruslan - demolitions/EOD Berkut - fighter pilot (Ukrainian) Akula - frogman Tanya - Intelligence Katya - communications Sergei - covert operations Yuri - Paratrooper Nikolai - recon Volga (Aliona Rhianoff) - Helicopter copilot/gunner Pasha - desert warfare Artem - arctic warfare Doctor Vladimir Chigvintsev - medic Edoard - vehicle driver Yevgeny - vehicle driver Aleksandr - moutaineer Oleg - sniper Gennadi - machine-gunner Yuri and Nikolai are named after the Russian characters in Modern Warfare 2 and 3 but are NOT them. Aliona's real name is from two Russian dancers on the UK Dancing with the Stars, as are Pasha, Artem and Dr. Vladimir's surname. I recently decided to add two vehicle drivers for their Kuvalda (Sledgehammer) assault vehicles (basically a fictional Russian version of a Striker IFV), a second machine-gunner besides Red Star and a second sniper so that they've got a proper sniper if Daina's flying the Yastreb (Hawk) attack copter* or their Mil-17 transport. Berkut flies the Sokol (Falcon) FSW fighter jet which is fictional operational version of the Sukhoi forward-swept wing jet. *The 2012 Con exclusive |

That's a nice size troop. You are rolling without the 4 dead Oktober Guardsmen? When you say Red Star 2IC who is the Commander? I had to move Diana over as a Russian to explain her existence. Maybe the child of a diplomat? Same for Schrage. Horrowshow and Wong and the Ukrainians I can chalk up to them growing up Russian, or having lived in MOSCOW their whole lives they were just born in Odessa or Tblisi so they identify with being Russian.

Yeah, the fan-fic are continuations of the comics stories, so Brekhov et al died in Sierra Gordo. Iron Bear's CO. The backstory I invented for Wong was that he's the son of a Chinese migrant father and a Russian mother, living on a farm in Siberia. His cowboy behaviour is because they used to pick up US tv from Alaska and he became obsessed with Westerns.
The thing with the Soviet nationals is, they might be from a SSR but live in the Russian SFSR or they might be serving in the Red Army when the Wall came down and wound up staying in the Russian Army instead of going 'home' or they might be ethnic Russians who emigrated 'back' to Russia - sorta like the Seps in eastern Ukraine, but y'know moved to Russia. my background to the Guard is that they were formed as a WarPac unit, but poor standards meant they only ended up with 6 troops. After the collapse of Communism, the Russians decided to increase the size and put Iron Bear in charge to smooth over international co-operation issues with CIS states and then they really went after the best and the brightest in the new Russian Army to staff the Guard. It takes them a good 3 years to reach that strength of numbers though. |
