Nice list. I wouldn't use any of them since they have all the same Codenames but it is good to know when I sit down and read those Action Force comics. I remember reading the old ones before the Baron became Cobra Commander, but not many of the ones after.

I'm curious, and have wondered this most of my life since they introduced Flash: What does a laser trooper really do? Of course, on the Sunbow cartoons, everyone was a "laser trooper" - they all had blasters like the characters in Star Wars. In reality though, would Flash simply hide behind cover and point his laser gun at a tank or other target to "spot" it for missiles? That seems lame.
I'm also perplexed on how the H.A.L. (Heavy Artillery Laser) would operate on the battle field? Would Grand Slam literally have to concentrate both barrels of his huge laser cannon on a flying enemy vehicle and track it until it eventually exploded? I just never understood how lasers would really work in reality except to "spot" targets for artillery or infantry. The file-cards for the laser troopers never helped me either. Sci-Fi's says that he just stood there so his laser could eventually cut through things. That's great, so long as no one's shooting at you. (This included the Laser-Vipers' file-cards which pretty much summed it up and it was always a let down for me, who thought the Cobra character looked so great with twin shoulder-mounted laser guns.) If anyone could enlighten me on how the laser troopers would work in the Joe universe (or the Real World, for that matter!) - or what they would do to be a viable part of the team on and off the battlefield - I would really appreciate it! pretty much how you said is how they'd work. They'd concentrate a beam of laser light on a spot and burn through it. The US Marvel comics show this with Flash in an early issue where he burns a hole in a door in the PIT after him, Snake Eyes and (iirc) Stalker are locked in. BAF shows it in Codename: Flash and the UK Marvel show it in AF Monthly (GI Joe: European Missions), when Sci-Fi burned through a cable connecting a BAT to a van bomb on Tower Bridge.
My fanfic describes the weapons as 'phased particle beam' weapons and the Space Force cosmic cruiser as also being armed with plasma pulse weapons. which basically translates as 'sci-fi rayguns'. |

How do you all treat Lt. Dolphin?
Lt. Dolphin (v1) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive SBS? Royal Navy submarine commander? Royal Marines? There is the submarine business but then he is all about the kayak which sounds more like Swimmer Canoeists. Then OF-1? LIEUTENANT? And Lieutenant commander of Q-Force? Possibly three different ranks on one filecard. does SBS use army or Naval ranks? (I use night Force Muskrat with a headswap with a Steeler figure)

Each Patrol is led by a SGT or CPL and they function as the troop sergeants. Troops in the UK tend to be constantly undermanned and officers only stick around in the regiment for a 2-3 year rotation before returning to their parent unit. The good ones usually come back to the regiment as Staff Officers and Squadron Commanders. In regards to Dolphin (and Q-Force), I use them as a mix of Royal Navy and Royal Marines and they're responsible for manning the mini submersibles, kinda like an SDV Platoon. Edit - I should have added that Royal navy officers sometimes do serve in the SBS, the last few years have seen alot of SAS Officers crossing over to command Troops because of undermanning Last edited by Tyroc; 09-05-2015 at 12:46 PM.. |

I treat them as Snipers. The equipment doesn't lend itself to concealment but Flash, Sci-Fi, Red-Spot, Dodger and now maybe Sightline are trained snipers who are now tasked with the laser weapons, which function like Star Wars lasers or the cartoons. I also treat all the Flamethrowers as laser troopers as well who carry a heavier Plasma weapon which is more like a shotgun blast. Laser-Vipers backpacks are similar to the Flamethrowers. HAL fires just a bigger ball of plasma. It just isn't a super laser beam. It has to miss sometimes. Its benefit is that it generates its own energy versus lugging around cases of shells.
In my verse this alien technology was discovered from a crashed clone vessel.

Zulu always used the laser guys as COLTS (Combat Observation Lasing Team) FM 6-20-50: TTPs For Fire Support For Brigade Operations (Light) - Appendix J Afghanistan and Iraq really saw the explosion of using small SOF teams using lasing technology to deliver precision munitions to devastating effect. It also forms part of the military using Directed Energy Weapons(DEW) to greater effect in the future. Use of DEW is seen as an important part of this next generation of warfare, where beligerants mingle within civilian populations in a concentrated urban setting. DEW gives the SOF the ability to disarm potential enemies without casualties and minimum collateral damage (based on the assumption that any poor civilians caught up will get better eventually as opposed to dying outright). |
