Yeah I tend to go with the highest rank they received. I treat Bench Press as a new character but he is obviously meant to be Rock'n'Roll. Not sure why they didn't call him so. My Rock'n'Roll is an E-8. I just don't like him as a Sgt. Major.
I treat Mercer as two different characters. Im partial to my Virginia boy, so he is an E-9. My verse he was an undercover Delta Force operator who actually got Mercer out of Cobra Island (may or may not be related). In the end there was some confusion about him as no one trusted him. But it turned out Sgt Major Cecil was always one of the good guys and was Hawk's Recce Sgt when they were in Delta together. Gen James Longstreet Flagg 3rd is another one. How is he the 3rd when his supposed father is Lawrence J Flagg? For me they are cousins really. With Flagg, it can easily be explained as although L.J. is his dad, he coulda been named after his grandfather/great grand. |

There was also a Major Flagg in Action Force (Battle Action Force Generation 3 continuity). A US officer, he first showed up in the same storyline where Baron Iron Blood transitions into Cobra Commander.
I like that continuity so have tried to incorporate some of it in my 'verse. Some of those Action Force / Joe guys had very different backgrounds too. Flash in AF continuity was called Jack Watts from Birmingham and was an ex-Green Jacket Gung Ho was a Marine from the Florida Everglades called Harry Brewer and was a Vietnam Vet Torpedo was a Dutch Combat Diver from Rotterdam and although his surname was never disclosed, he kept referring to himself in the storyline as 'Old Pieter' Duke was an Airborne Ranger (never a Green Beret) from Boston I'm going to use all the International variations as new characters, why not there are what 60 odd different Duke figures? |

How do you incorporate the international characters? As part of Action Force or from their respective nations?

There are quite a few instances of ex-US personnel serving in UK / Aust / NZ special mission units and vice-versa. Although it's more prevalent among the Commonwealth countries, I've read a few biographies where the author acknowledges an Ivy League dropout serving in the Special Boat Service, an Ex-SEAL in the Australian Commando Regiment, an ex-Para serving in Delta etc. A friend of mine was a US Recon Marine who married an Australian girl and served with the Australian Commando Regiment (he's now a Private Security Contractor). Heck, as part of my job I met an FBI HRT member who was on exchange with the SASR. I didn't know they had exchanges with law enforcement but he said the arrangement had been in place for almost 20 years. Oops rambling. The Action Force characters like Eagle, Skip, Stakeout etc are Action Force. There were so many red shirt characters that I just don't need to add characters like Action Force Flint, Lady Jaye etc. There were some great one off AF characters like Porcupine, Nightingale, Shotgun, Crow, Pike and Wildcat. |

ooh Elaborate on those last 5? I don't include the other European Versions of Joes so I'm not sure who they all are. If thye have the same Codename I ignore them. IF not I might add them since I am taking away from my Action Force guys in different ways.
I include Action Force guys as one cohesive unit who as part of the Joe Task Force, but all are either British Citizens or COmmonwealth nations exchange participants, like Beaver, Digger, Skymate. But like Quarrel and Sparrowhawk are from the UK. I Include all the South American Joes as Americans, So Shimik, Manleh are all part of US units. I also have Jammer as a Combat Controller, part of the JOes and Blades as well since they are Americans. Not Sure what to do about Hunter and Gaucho, but I will probably add thme to the Joes as Mexican-Americans, but my Action Force Roster could be bigger. My Action Force so far: Trent (Colonel) Cmd Bond (Maurauders Falcon) Moondancer (O-5) Boffin (O-5) Major Buckingham (Eagle) Action Man (O-4) Skip (O-3) Lt. Dolphin (O-3) Hot Jets (O-2) Chopper (O-2) Big Ben (E-8) Natalie Poole (E-7) Phones (E-7) Quarrel (E-6) Sgt Stakis (E-6) Digger (E-6) Skymate (E-6) Stryker (E-6) (Extreme) Wheels (E-4) Scout (E-4) Sapper (E-4) Sparrowhawk (E-4) Barracuda (E-4) Quickfire (E-4) Stakeout (E-4) Beaver (E-4) Shark (E-4) Surfer (E-4) Bombardier (E-4) listed as (OR-5 but there is no UK equivalent) Kiwi (E-4) Still looking to add Hawkwind but haven't done so yet.

those last five Tyroc mentioned are all Battle Action Force comics-only redshirts who show up in BAF stories solely to get killed off.
It's something I adressed in a photo dio thing I did once - AF is more realistic than Joe for having more casualties. But when Joe does it, it's characters you care about. there is, or was, a page on BFTB that listed all the red shirts that were killed. |

there we go. some have codenames, many more don't. If anyone's interested, I have a list of the international birthplaces used on the UK filecards, both of the Pallitoy packed era and the Hasbro era. It's not complete, but... |
