Cobra Trooper vs Viper is so convoluted now. The 1997 / 1998 cards were written by Joe fans (GI Trekker and Thomas Wheeler I think). They did a great job for that point in time but I don't think either had much experience or knowledge about the military. They don't hold up that well.
I use Cobra as a rogue Private Security Company, Blue Shirts are Grade I Security employed to guard installations, shipyards, air fields, Convoy Security, etc. Generally deployed within the US and non war zones. Vipers are to use Zulu Delta's idea Veteran Infantry Personnel; they're ex-Military and are used as Close Protection, Training, Force Protection / Anti-Terrorism. They're deployed overseas and in non permissive environments. They're also used in a war fighting role. Country A is at war with Country B in some far away hellhole, Country A makes a deal with Cobra to fight their war in exchange for their mineral and natural resource rights and Cobra deploys Vipers to train, lead, fight and neutralize Country B. Being a Trooper is not somehow a lower level in my verse, just different roles. The Troopers can get assigned very sensitive missions, guarding Nuclear Power Plants, Banks, Expensive Equipment etc. Renegade Troopers are the Force Protection / Anti-Terrorism element (like SWAT) within the Blue Shirts. |

Ah crap! I think that's the Collector Club's fault. However, I have to wonder if tank drivers are usually ranked at O-5? Is that a mistake by Hama, because that sure seems high for someone simply driving a tank? (Of course, Cobra doesn't have to follow U.S. military standards...)

I agree as a terrorist organization the "blue Shirts" get the call and go into action. As the size of Cobra grew, i've moved over to the Private Military Contractor point of view. Musch like Tyroc and Zulu. But they are still Terrorists for the most part, and Mercenaries probably first and foremost. Almost all PMCs are essentially mercenaries and are exempt from Article 4 POW status of the Geneva Convention. Usually they are treated as unlawful combatants.

I always tended to think that Cobra started out with their soldiers as blue shirts. As the years progressed and Cobra acquired better technology they were able to suit up most of their soldiers in the Viper uniforms. Maybe not all units were given these new uniforms and equipment right away (due to budgetary reasons or whatever) and thus you have some units equipped as Vipers and some still sporting the old "blue shirts" uniforms. Maybe the frontline units were given them first?

That's how I see it, John Shaft. In the beginning, when Cobra didn't have as much money, they skimped on armor and the like. Later, after losing so much cannon fodder, they started equipping the troops better.

There are other Joes with social services as a SMS (Muskrat, Hardball, Footloose, Psyche-Out, Cutter). All of them would be involved in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (mostly organizing sports, entertainment, keeping the beer fridge stocked) but some like Psyche-Out, Spirit (and Devil's Due Frostbite) would be there for personal affairs including substance abuse counseling (Frostbite in the DDP Handbook was a substance abuse counselor). |

Oliverbox as an Army and SOF Chaplain can give you way more information but that's the jist of it. Doc I and II, and Wild Card are Chaplain's Assistants but as an enlisted specialty, neither of the Doc's would be Chaplain's Assts. This error is probably because Larry Hama envisioned Doc as a Navy enlisted corpsman before the people at Hasbro decided to make him an officer and changed his filecard. |
