Cobra (v1) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive
The original Cobras' file-cards made it clear that they were ranked "E-4 (or equivalent)." I interpret this as an obvious reference to these soldiers being Sergeant grade. Since Hama wrote these, I personally kind of consider them "canon." E-4 means you have Two years of military experience at the minimum. I am not sure what Hama intended since he didn't write the cobra trooper Filecards and he wrote the cobra Filecards way before anything else.

E-4 isn't an NCO rank typically and although there are some inconsistencies, I separate the Cobras/Cobra Troopers from Vipers. One isn't below the other. The Vipers to me are more like the Rangers, elite infantry, and the Cobra Troopers are regular army. They all start out as privates and work their way up.
The original 1986 Viper file-card says that everyone has to start out as a "Viper" (not a Cobra or Cobra Trooper). I just always interpreted this as the "starting point" for everyone, Cobras and Cobra Troopers included. Once again, though, I'm arrested by the 1998 "Cobra Trooper" file-card that claims that Cobra Troopers are lower even than Vipers. It seems inconsistent. (Like Loose Cannon, my theory is that the 1998 Cobra Trooper file-card was not written by Larry Hama, but the 1982 Cobra and 1986 Viper file-cards were.) E-4 is only Sgt. In the Air Force but still a relatively low Ranking Soldier. The highest of the lows ranks before Sgts. Considering that this is the same rank that the lowest Ranking Joes come in with (not counting Ambush and ROBO-JOE) it does not denote any sort of seniority for me.

E-4's in the Marine Corps are NCO's

Perhaps. But they have some military training, whether prior to or once joining Cobra. Like Tanksmasher I believe that regardless of branch they have ranks that start at some point and they work their way up. The ranks hold status throughout Cobra so a Cobra Major who is a blueshirt ranks above a Lamprey who is a Captain.but all branches have ranks from E-1 to O-4. I say O-4 because after that you probably become a named Cobra and a commander of a unit. Like Skullbuster or Guillotine.
In my view Vipers are all Troopers who decided to join the Viper Corps so Vipers all start as E-4 to begin with. Everyone starts as a Blueshirt Trooper at recruit/E-1/private. Guys with prior military service join Cobra, zip through the Blueshirts and then move right to the Viper Corps or Eels where the serious soldiers are. Anyone can be a Blueshirt. But imagine a Navy SEAL or an SAS Commando joins Cobra most of the ill trained criminals that join Cobra are going to get him killed. He would be eyeing for the Alley-Vipers where the real men are. I think Vipers were originally intended to replace the Trooper as the basic Cobra Soldier, and for a while they did, but somehow over the years they began to coexist. The DTC Cobra trooper Filecard is the only ine to acknowledge the existence of both. Still that's half the fun for me is making it work in my Joeverse. So I tweak it to make sense from the most realistic view. I mean Crimson Guards should not be enlisted. O-4 makes more sense. As far as we know, Hama stopped writing the filecards 1987. Excluding Claymore for sure as he confessed that was not him either.

Truthfully it is way too convoluted. To me, Vipers are just blue shirts, that are "combat ready"

Right a Corporal is considered an NCO in the Marines. Not sure about Army E-4 Specialists but I believe Army Corporals are also considered NCOs.

Lifeline_MD had a chart where he went so far as to break down the various pipelines Cobra Vipers go through to get to the most elite Cobra units. Such as Rock-Vipers feeding into Range-Vipers. Although what does one go onto after joining SAW-VIPERS OR HEAT. I suppose they just make up a Cobra Viper Company Weapon's Section.

Yeah that one is almost as bad as CGs being Corporals. Rip-It should be the O-5 commander of the HISS tank Battalion. He is listed as O-1. Sometimes I wonder what Hama is thinking.
