I came across this pic while researching a rank for Mariner and it prompted some questions
1) It has Barrel Roll listed as a Lt., the highest rank on any of his filecards is E5. What rank do you guys use? 2) Depth Charge is listed as a Sgt. Last time I checked there are none of those in the Navy. Highest filecard rank is E5 which is a Sgt in the Army and Marine Corps. Does any of the other branches have an underwater demolitions MOS? 3) Not related to this picture, but rank related- Torpedo has some figures named Chief Torpedo and some Lt. Torpedo although his highest filecard rank is WO5. What rank do you guys use? |

Yes this one image brings us a bevy of posibilities:
I have always maintained Barrel-Roll as a Lt. I've dropped the pilot aspect of his qualifications though. More recently I'm undecided to make him an Air Force Special Tactics Officer or Combat Rescue Officer. Also since I have him with Sky Patrol I don't really want him as the Commander. Especially since I also have Countdown as Air Liason officer part of Sky Patrol (I use ROC Rollbar as COuntdown) I use a ROC Shipwreck body with a POC trooper capped head as Depth Charge. He's a SEAL for me. I bumped my Torpedo to O-3 after that Lt. Torpedo filecard came out.

We know at the time the toy was created, all the UDTs had been made Navy SEALs and weren't a separate unit anymore. He should be a Petty Officer 2nd Class. The Army has dive-qualified engineers that can blow up underwater obstacles, but they aren't combat divers.I don't know if the Marines or Air Force have engineers with similar duties. 3) I believe Warrant Officers in the Navy are called Chief. Even though, his 25th filecard says Lt. Torpedo, his grade is still listed as WO-4. This similar to the Flint v1 filecard that calls him a Warrant Officer, but lists his grade as E-6.

Also, I'm trying to put all my intel and covert people in one unit- people like Chuckles, Faces, Scarlett, Lady Jaye, etc. I've got a couple of non-traditional choices I wanted to run by you guys.
1) Covergirl. Several of her figures refer to her as "agent" and her being a spy is more believable to me than model turned grease monkey. 2) Mouse. Again, because of his "agent" status. I like the idea of having a Brad Pitt in Spy Game like character on the team. Pitt's Tom Bishop [codename: Boy Scout] was a Scout Sniper in Vietnam. 3) Scoop. I recall a conversation in this thread not too long ago about what to do with him. At the time I was thinking infantry, but now I'm leaning towards tech guy/ surveillance for this team. Like Simon Pegg's character in Mission Impossible movies. Also, he and Covergirl could pose as model & photographer or reporter & cameraman for missions. In my fanfic, Barrel Roll is an officer pilot, ranked Major.
Depth Charge is a PO2 in my fan-fic. Torpedo's still only a WO5 in my fan-fic. |

All good suggestions Topside. I am not sure where I have Mouse in my verse, but he is a sniper.

Maybe during HALO drops he likes to attempt to do a maneuver similar to a barrel roll just to show off, hence his code name? I typically make my enlisted Joes between an E-5 to an E-9 so for him probably about an E-6. I just make Depth Charge a Navy SEAL. Someone noted many pages back that UDT's became today's SEAL's so it make sense for him to be one. In regards to Torpedo it depends on how I structure my Joes. If I put him in charge of a Troop he will be an O-3. Otherwise if he is part of a troop I would make him an E-7. I think I read somewhere else that in order to be a WO-4 in Navy would take many years (I believe they said roughly 22-25 years). While I think the Joes should be older (33-42) the wear and tear of being a SEAL, I believe, might be too much for someone who has been in the service for more than 20 years. If you make him a warrant officer a WO-2 might be more realistic. EDIT: Just noticed blackrazor1's post about UDT's and that he already covered it. I want to keep Barrel Roll as a sniper. He and Cloudburst, his spotter, provide overwatch for Sky Patrol and the rest of the air assault ruck from their gliders.
I also count Depth Charge as a SEAL along with Deep Six. But not Shipwreck. Last edited by Topside; 06-25-2015 at 09:19 PM.. |

I make Deep Six Navy EOD. For Shipwreck I am usually torn, either Navy SEAL or SWCC. It depends on how I will eventually structure my Joe team. If they provide some of their own logistics (such as a Special Operations Craft) then I will make him former SWCC. However if I go with a more SAS/Delta approach (where they do not provide their own aircraft/boats/etc) then he will most likely be a former SEAL. I always hated his later filmcards that stated he was sent to BUDS training to straighten out his attitude or something. I imagine the Joe's already having a training pipeline similar to the SAS/Delta, which would already be tough enough. Plus I seriously doubt a tier 1 unit would accept someone if they were as much as a discipline problem as Shipwreck is depicted. Tier 1 guys are usually described as quiet and very professional, not rowdy and obnoxious so I don't see Shipwreck as behaving in a way that might get his teammates killed or that would compromise a mission.
