The SAS certainly reduces everyone to Trooper, and certainly they're not going to keep anyone who joins from an armoured or artillery unit as that specialism, but AFAIK, the British Army doesn't have those kind of strict MOS things anyway. I won't swear to it, but AFAIK, from what my dad told me, or what I've read, you're either a medic, signaller, logistics, EOD, engineer, mechanic, infantry, para, MP, or what have you depending on your unit. Royal Corps of Signals has a bunch of specialities owing to all the computer tech these days, to do with radio gear, computer gear, network technology and so on, and the other support Corps - Medical, Logistics, for example and the REME or the Royal Engineers may have a bunch too, but I think in the RMP, Parachute Regiment and the line regiments, you're just an MP, an infatryman or what have you. Army Air Corps natch has a load with ordnance specialists, mechanics and so on. AFAIK, most of the people who join UKSF or Pathfinders tend to be from Royal Corps of Signals, the Engineer units or from line infantry. Not too many tank crew or artillery guys going into Selection...

Using him as MMS guy is genius. That's a really great choice, Tanksmasher.

Thanks for the clarification! My take on the Joe team is that any MOS can try out for them, hence why you have firefighters and CBRN guys on the team. They just learn the new skills and obviously don't work within their old MOS's. So people like Barbecue and Airtight might go into a medical specialty (if I go with the Joes being exactly like the SAS) as BBQ would most likely have some first-responder training. Soldiers like Grunt might be an RTO since he used to be an "artillery coordinator" (essentially a forward observer) who employ radios on a consistent basis. Basically if I go the SAS route I am trying to fit in all my "ground-pounders Joes" into a logical place on a saber squadron. Although the one thing that might be a little off is someone like Lifeline, who in my Joe-verse is a PJ. With all of the specialized skills he has why would he want to be a counter terrorist agent who also perform special reconnaissance, direct action raids, and VIP protection? What would his (and other Joes in a similar position) motivation be? |

Don't forget the SAS has more than just the 4 Troops (Air, Mobility, Boat and Mountain) in the Sabre Squadrons. They have other specialist cells and detachments including Combat Support (Medical, Breaching, Dog Handlers, EOD, CBRN), Intelligence, etc.
Here's a link to the French wikipedia entry for the SAS. It has way more detail on the organization than similar wiki entries https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Air_Service Last edited by Tyroc; 06-21-2015 at 09:27 PM.. |

Hasbro made a very nice Marine Mammal System Navy Dolphin Handler in the 12" line in 2004. The best thing about the 12" guys is that they came in a variety of hair colors / ethinicities. From memory the Dolphin Handler came in Asian, Hispanic, African American and Caucasian (Red Hair, Brown Hair and Blonde Hair). That's 6 individualized characters right there.

John, I'd agree with you on BBQ being more than just a firefighter. In my world, he's also had EMT training, plus he'd make a great breacher on urban ops, a heavy vehicle operator, and someone who's familiar with Haz-Mat situations. As to your Lifeline question, I was thinking of the Transformer First Aid, who joined up because he realized that the only way to stop people from getting hurt or killed is to end the fighting. Plus, as a former EMT myself, I can tell you that most of us are also adrenaline junkies .

They train dolphins in the Navy? Similar to training service dogs on land?

Here's a link to the French wikipedia entry for the SAS. It has way more detail on the organization than similar wiki entries https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Air_Service Also I do have a few of the Joes in support detachments, but was trying to focus most of the artillery, infantry, armor, SOF Joes into actual operators. Excellent use on BBQ! He was always one of my "odd man out" characters but now he is much more usable thanks to your suggestions! I am going to check this out. One of the other things I was trying to figure out is if there is information out there that shows the percentage of "MOS's" that join the SAS (such as 57% infantry, 20% engineers, etc). I would imagine such information might be classified though. |
