Do we know what year the Joes supposedly formed? I know the figures and the comic started in 1982, so that's where we pick up the story. But they must have formed a little bit earlier since Snake Eyes was injured during an early mission and he's already wearing the mask when we first see him. Maybe a year earlier? If that's the case, then I wonder if some of the original guys were less than E-4 when they got recruited. It seems unlikely but it's possible.
And if Stalker had remained in the army throughout the 70s, it seems like he should have been higher than E-5 by 1982. I know Hama envisioned him as the unofficial top sergeant of the team before Duke, so I wonder why he wasn't a little higher in rank. Staff Sergeant at least, if not Sergeant First Class. |

You know what I just realized?
Destro and the Baroness are younger then Snake-Eyes. In 'Nam, Destro was a mid-teenager (probably 16-18) when on the deal with his father when encountred a 15 year old Baroness.

After Japan, he spends a year in the High Sierras, so now it's 1981 when Stalker/Hawk come to recruit him. So the Joes formed around 1980/1981.

Then again I found this interesting factoid: "In February, 1945, at the age of 26, Thyng became the youngest Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Force."

I'm sure we lost alot of Colonel's during WW2, so had a lot of spots to fill and if this guy showed alot of ability, would help account for his rapid rise.

Here's some other history:
Excerpt-- "In the fast lane—after receiving his history degree, [David] Hackworth vaulted up the promotion lists. Five years later, in Vietnam, in 1971, he was the youngest colonel in the Army and its most decorated officer with 105 medals—with more than 27 for valor." This guy was forty when he made Col but then again he joined the Army at age 15. |

Let's not forget that Hawk comes from a real blue-blood family. Maybe pops Abernathy greased a few palms to get young Clayton moved up the ladder a little bit faster. A few well-placed "campaign donations" for the right congressmen could have worked wonders.

Yeah, I'm sure there were some outstanding circumstances for his promotion. However, David Hackworth is a more realistic example of a young colonel, but again he joined when he was 15 so the average age for colonel does revolve around the mid 40s.

I'd love to see the backstory on Hawk. He's always been the "brass" version of Duke. And why did Joe Colton, or whoever, choose a guy with a background in Artillery and radar to lead GI Joe.

Hawk's file card says he's the kind of guy who goes out and gets shot at. Really? I never thought of artillery guys as the tip of the spearhead.
