What about Astro-Vipers and TARGATS?
What is the MO of an ALO? I just use Space Shot as my Stalin. The resemblance is uncanny. |

TARGETS I love. ASTRO-VIPER is one of my least favorite Cobras. Although I like STAR-VIPERS. I think they would be skirting the edge of the atmosphere to come down on unsuspecting targets.
ALOs are like a battalion level and up asset for Army commanders. Usually they are all pilots and command the JTACs assigned to the unit. Doesnt sound so glamorous but I give my Countdown a bigger role. I wonder if there is some overlapping with Combat Controllers and ALO. I have him attached to Sky Patrol, but I don't know if that is the best place since he outranks everyone. I use ROC rollbar as Countdown.

Call it the Howler or whatever they used in Resolute.
I could see problems with landing that thing though.

shame they got the bit about the V22 wrong. It takes off and lands like a helicopter because of those big-ass blades. it flies like a plane.
for the concept of a space-plane transporting commandos around the world, I recommend Dale Brown's novel Strike Force from 2007. It features the 'XR9A Black Stallion' which flies up to altitude on conventional engines, then uses laser-pulsed detonation engines (called 'leopards') to achieve hypersonic flight into low-Earth orbit, then glides down to the LZ and takes off the same way. |

Is that anywhere close to a reality. Laser fired engines and what not?

i dunno, a lot of the later DB books took stuff that's at the edges of science and made it 'real' in the books. UCAVs flown off B52s and B1s, UCAV B1s, plasma-lasers on board modified bombers, autonomous undersea drones, UCAV helicopters, powered-armour suits, small mech suits, plasma bombs... it all got very sci-fi and I checked out after getting a bit fed up with it all. |

Except for posting my BST I have been off this site for several years. By chance I eventually found this thread by doing a Google search of "GI Joe organization" as I have for years been wanting to organize them into a coherent unit. I chanced upon Zuludelta's very well-detailed modern updates on the Joe characters which led me to this thread. I am only up to post 1276 (which took me several weeks) but I kind of got impatient and posted anyway. I wish I would have known about this thread years ago! This is exactly the kind of material I have been hunting for.
For years I have been going back and forth on how to classify my Joes. I always use the filecards first, followed by the Marvel comics while never using anything from the toons. I have thought of a couple of different ways to organize them and have been leaning towards more of an SAS style (Squadrons made of 16-man Troops and an HQ element). I would make some Troops with different insertion methods (Mobility, HALO, SCUBA, and Mountain). My justification for all of the characters would be that the Joe team would be open to any service, rank E-5 and up for enlisted and O-3 and up for officers. Any MOS could attempt to join them (such as a firefighter such as Barbecue). They would leave their old MOS's behind (BBQ would not be a firefighter anymore) and become a Joe trooper trained in special reconnaissance, direct action, counter-terrorism, etc. However a couple things keep crossing my mind. The first of which is would Joes like Airtight still use his old MOS skill of CBRN as a Joe Trooper? The second thing is Delta Force already exists so why would the DoD need another tier 1 counter-terrorism force? My other option was as a joint task force. A Special Forces ODA (led by Falcon) would work with a SEAL platoon (led by Torpedo), etc. But my understanding is that JTF's are only temporary and I would want my unit together for quite some time. So yeah it's been a never ending struggle as to figure out how to organize my Joes. lol |
