Another Flagg 2 question: How would this guy co-exist with Hawk? What the heck are Chief Strategic Commander and General Commander supposed to be, and how are they different from each other? The later Hawks have a higher pay grade than Flagg, so does that mean Hawk is allowed to order Flagg around, or do they gotta agree with everything?
Also, might as well ask this here: What is up with Lightfoot's gear? Seriously, what is that crap, and is it based on anything real? |

I don't think you can pay much attention to those specialties. I think once you are General your MOS is just General Officer. However following the Continental Staff system you could have each general taking a role at headquarters.
Staff (military - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I personally have too many Generals but they are there, so my Joes Chain of command: 0-10 Gen. Colton - Commanding Officer (S5-Plans) 0-9 Lt Gen. Austin - Deputy Commander (S1-Personnel) 0-9 Vice Adm. Keel-Haul- Chief of Naval Operations (S3-Operations) 0-8 Maj. Gen. Lawrence J. Flagg (S9-Civil Affairs) 0-8 Maj. Gen. Hollingsworth (S8-Resource Management) 0-8 Maj. Gen. Sharp (S6-Signal) 0-7 Brig Gen. Hawk (S2-Intelligence) 0-7 Brig Gen. James Longstreet Flagg (S7-Training) 0-7 Rear Adm. Ledger (S4-Logistics) I need to break them out into various roles, but I change it regularly and I also include some Marvel characters in my universe sometimes.

I use this as their official office duties. I like the regional set up and have toyed with it before. I think it was a South America team an Africa tea, but I don't remember.

I've always thought of Joe Colton as overseer, because G.I. Joe is his "baby"; but he never really takes an active role like Hawk does. He's treated more like a "retired" honoree that is seriously respected and when he gives advice, it is usually followed. (Yes, I realize that he is still an active U.S. officer.) I stick with Hawk as a Major General, because it doesn't make sense that he keeps being demoted and promoted, as per the file-cards. He is the de facto leader of the team, but has to answer to a whole slew of people, beginning with the President. That means that Brig. Gen. Flagg "Jr." answers to Hawk; not equal in any way to Hawk when it comes to a pay grade. Last edited by seaneley; 05-06-2015 at 07:13 PM.. |

That's why I suggested regional commands. They could all be GO/FOs in the SOF community but with broader mandates (such as all American SOF operations in, say, South America, or Africa or etc . . . So, hypothetically, they could be doing liaison with ambassadors and foreign military HQs, oversee some SF or SEAL strategic reconnaissance missions, then call in Joe to strike a target.
Loose Cannon - two minor points: First, a commander commands. S/he doesn't also do a staff job (S5, in Colton's case). Second, and it's more minor, the "S" designation is usually used at unit (battalion) level. "G" is used in Army general staffs at Brigade, Div and so on levels. "J" is used for joint (multiple service) HQs. Given the nature of Joe in particular and SOF in general, you're probably better off using "J" in your staff designations. But it's a really minor point. |

Oh yeah. It should totally be "J". But I rarely think of them in these terms.
I liked the regional command but always ran into an issue when I get to the Arctic Joes. Then I have Action Force guys. I thought it would be cool to have 3 or 4 separate but equal teams stationed in key locations. So The Brigadier generals are the team leads. I forgot Rey as well. But I usually have them broken into specialties Rather than regions. I have an: Airborne/Air Assault/Mountain team Naval, Marine, Jungle Team Arctic HQ research team Desert Armor/artillery team Urban assault team Experimental special weapons team. I suppose they should be deployed regionally and thus ready to go at a moments notice since all are qualified to perform hostage, rescue. And all teams have some air support elements.

in my fan-fic, my command staff is Hawk as CO, Flagg as 2IC, Col. Courage as ops officer, Captain Falcon as SOF team commander, Captain Grid Iron and Claymore as commanders for other 'regular' teams, Major Storm as armour commander. Major Ace as Air det commander, Wild Bill as helo det commander, Lt. Cdr Cutter as Naval Ops commander, Torpedo as SEAL team leader.

Is it realistic that this many generals would be requisitioned for a Special Ops team like G.I. Joe, or do many of these fellows have other duties outside of the Special Ops community? It seems a lot of high-rankers for such a little group when one considers the whole military.
The Joes seem to have more General staff than all of JSOC Having all those high up the food chain officers only works if the Joes are their own branch of the military. |
