Found it. Looks like The total number of active duty general or flag officers is capped at 231 for the Army, 162 for the Navy, 198 for the Air Force, 61 for the Marine Corps.

For the US, the difference is in the squads. USMC, there are three fire teams ins a squad, and a squad leader for 13 swinging richards. In the Army, there is something different about how machine gun teams are assigned to the rifle squad. With the Marine Corps, machine guns (M240G) are a company asset and a rifle squad may get a gun team attached but it isn't part of the squad permanently. On edit, the fire team leader is also the grenadier according to USMC lore because the rifleman had a tendency to quickly burn through all the grenades where as the more mature corporal fire team leader would be more circumspect in his use of their only indirect fire asset. Going back to the discussion on who was a green beanie and who was Delta, one of the high end 12in makers had a Rock and Roll with a green beret, and for some reason, it just felt right to me. I hate to say it as a Marine, but of the people I have personally worked with, the Green Berets are the most professional, truly the quiet professionals.
I think that Clutch probably is Delta or something similar, his OG13 file card talks about his civilian life as a gearhead but most of his military quals were standard infantry stuff, which makes sense. Humvee drivers in an infantry battalion are just grunts driving the humvee. So I see Clutch as a Ranger or Delta. Interestingly, in the comic line GI Joe Reloaded, RnR is a SEAL, which sort of fits with his surfer gig I suppose. And for some reason, they refer to Beachhead as Master Chief Sneedan. I wonder if that is a rookie mistake with the writer, not realizing Master Chief is a Navy rating, or is Beachhead now a SEAL? |

Man I disregard Reloaded entirely. Having established characters switch services is just annoying. There are some guys who are somewhat ambiguous and could fill those underrepresented servicemen. But Rock'n'Roll just looks the part of the modern day Green Berets operating in Afghanistan.
I love your Clutch theory. Totally perfect candidate for Delta. Same goes for all the drivers except Night Fox.

Fireteam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia UK fire-team at the link. Interesting link. I always enjoy reading how other countries set up their small unit infantry. Interesting that the UK has a designated marksman in every fireteam, because the UK was way ahead of the US in putting optics on all rifles used by infantry and ground combat forces. I believe the L85 was fielded in the mid 80s, and ground combat units had scopes then. We didn't get them until the late 90s and even then, they were not universal. The USMC prides itself on rifle marksmanship but felt that switching to scopes took away the skill necessary to line up iron sights. My thought was "um,yeah, this is kind of the idea". There was also concern over the reliability and robustness of the optics and how well they maintain zero under abusive conditions. A sniper will treat his rifle like a Stradivarius Violin, a grunt treats it like a crowbar at times. Last edited by hardcorps; 05-01-2015 at 08:43 AM.. |

the L85, or the SA80 as it's commonly called, was fielded in the late 80s with the integral SUSAT sight as standard, like the G36 has an integral sight as standard on the basic model. I thought we should've bought the M16, personally. H&K had to severely re-engineer the weapon to make it decent. UKSF and the Pathfinders resisted using it and instead used M16s for years until some MoD twonk insisted they swap. I think these days they're using M4s...

To be fair, the M16 series is now a decent rifle, but it is a long time in coming. It had a lot of birthing problems as well and through the various changes, we have had to change bullet weights to accommodate different rifling twists. Chrome lined chamber and barrel, which reduces accuracy slight, very slightly, but increases barrel life and eases cleaning. And, finally started putting optics on them. I was issued an M14 variant at one point and I preferred it to the M16 but over the years, I sort of came around to the M16. I now have my own AR15/M4 instead of buying an M14, mostly because it was easier for my daughter to shoot. |
