Speaking of Aussies, I see the Australian Joes Thread is the only thread larger than this one that is not a Game Thread. That must be a pretty tight community within the Tank.
This is still the longest running active thread.

To follow up on a point raised by Oliverbox (who went on a rampage!), I think that the folks at Hasbro, plus Hama, didn't actually know much about the military. There was a bit of knowledge, and clearly lots of research for vehicles and equipment, but the troops themselves . . . a lot of it seems made up, leaving us to try to paper over the cracks.
But that Flint-Delta concept is an interesting one when put beside photos of Shughart and Gordon - especially since in another set of photos it's clear that both of those two have Airborne and Ranger tabs, but only Shughart has a Special Forces tab. I'm sold. Also, on the idea of Joe as an offshoot of Delta: since it's a joint unit (made up of troops from all the services) I figure it's a precursor to JSOC or some such entity. |

You're right to say there's been some errors due to ignorance about the military but Hama actually served in the army in Vietnam as an ordnance expert and he helped flesh out a lot of the characters' military background. Granted he knew this was also a toy-driven storyline so there was room for creative embellishment but he brought a lot of his knowledge of military tactics and such to the table. I think he always intended for Snake and Stalker to have served with SOG but that was a highly secret unit and not much published on it till years after the war, so Hama probably wasn't aware that the recon missions were only conducted by Special Forces and not regular LRPs, although SOG and LRPs sometimes did cross paths. But most of the fun is trying to find real life rationales to explain discrepancies, although explaining how Leatherneck was a Tech Sgt. when that rank didn't exist anymore during his service is a challenging one. ;-)

Also, I'm sorry if I "rampaged". I suppose I was a bit overdue around here. The "Flint-Beret" Rampage of 2015, as it will henceforth be known, was a way to let out a lot of pent-up frustration about the beret issue. It's been years in the making.

I'm not implying Hama knew all things military but he brought some military realism to the brand which he should receive credit for. Granted he made some corrections to characters that I don't think we're necessary. For example, Steeler originally was going to be an E-6 but Hama insisted he should be an officer since he's a tank commander, but E-6s and E-7s do fill the role of tank commander. He may have been thinking of a tank platoon leader. Also, many of the military specialties in the cards don't perfectly equate to a real MOS, but again GI Joe is hybrid of fantasy and realism.

Well, I ordered a new JoeCon Tiger Force Stalker.
I wanted the figure, but I really wanted the file card. I am dissappointed. No mention of Special Forces at all. Crap.

ANything new on the filecard? Is he E-7, E-5? Is it just a repeat of the Tiger-FOrce TRU 5-pack filecard?
