Got a few questions:
Laser-Viper: According to the filecard they're primarily used as spotters for bombs and such. With modern technology, would it be possible to use them as spotters for, say, SAW Vipers or Range-Vipers? Rampart: Trying to find a use for this guy. So basically he shoots down planes? He's a Navy guy, so would he be a useful crew member on the WHALE? Is he only good for shooting down planes, or are boats and tanks fair game, too? What about Backblast? Is he interchangeable with the likes of Zap and Bazooka? Are Scoop and the Techno-Vipers usable for manning the computers back at base? |

I know, but seeing as I don't own any Cobra aircrafts they're getting kinda bored. So I'm wondering if a Joe with AA training can serve as an AT troop or whether they require completely different skill-sets? |

Air Defence usually falls under the artillery branch. That doesn't mean that every air defender has been trained on a howitzer, mortar or rocket system, but I see more of a natural fit there than in an anti-tank role. I'd be inclined to make the anit-air guys back-up mortarmen.

I think targeting for HEATs makes them either useless or too powerful (depending on whether they find their target), so I was thinking of troops with lighter heavy weapons. Though I guess the problem still remains: either they find the target and there's a direct hit or they're just "shining flashlights".
Yeah, especially since I see Joe as essentially an offensive unit. What shorelines do Joes need to defend? I see this guy sitting around Miami Beach waiting for an air-attack and Cobra ruins his day by coming in by boat... I know, but seeing as I don't own any Cobra aircrafts they're getting kinda bored. So I'm wondering if a Joe with AA training can serve as an AT troop or whether they require completely different skill-sets? 8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37/41 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm pretty sure the Nazis and WWII era Soviet Union used Anti-aircraft guns as Anti-armour weapons. Like the 88 Gun. So I don't see why they can't help out Zap and Bazooka.

Has there been a discussion about General Flagg's wild filecard? He's supposed to be the son of the original Flagg, who was a pretty young guy (Hawk says as much in issue #1), yet Flagg III has already been promoted to general himself? Makes no sense. How old is the youngest US general in modern days, anyway?
To confuse matters further, the Comic Pack Flagg figure gives the same name and info to the dead Flagg! If we play along, the only logical explanation is that the "original G.I.Joe general" mentioned in the filecard is actually a behind the scenes Flagg who quit/retired/died before the first issue, and the 1992 version is actually the same guy from the comic books as a resurrected/tribute version, am I right? Although I always just ignored the filecard and considered him a brother. Heck, the figure of the son even looks older. |

Yeah I always considered them half-brothers. There is no way these two are father and son. The timing is too close and the names don't add up.
One is Lawrence J. And the other is James L. Flagg III. even if the "L" stood for Lawrence (it stands for Longstreet) You don't usually skip a generation to name a child the "Third" unless you are royalty. My theory, they share the same father James Longstreet Flagg Jr. He wanted to name the first Flagg after himself but the mother's father was also a General named Lawrence and hence the name. She died somehow and so he remarried and named the second son after himself.

royalty doesn't name their kid the third, fourth or whatever any way. when the kid's born they just give them a name which changes to King/Queen Whatsit the whatever when they assume the throne. EG: Queen Elizabeth II was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. She only became Elizabeth II on accession to the throne. Some monarchs change their name - people thought the Queen would to leave Elizabeth I as sole Elizabeth, but she refused. Speculation runs about whether Charles will change his name since I and II were unpopular, but he's apparently said he's going to be Charles III.

QE2 will outlive Charles anyway. How many Williams has there been? Or do they only count this one family?
Still they British Monarchy doesn't even do it so that only furthers the reason that the two Flaggs are not father/son.

I dunno about that, the Queen Mum was 103 when she died and she was frailer by her 80s than HM The Queen, so I can see her hitting triple digits easily, but I suspect Charles will get the throne, albeit for probably no more than 20-25 years. I'd prefer we skipped to William, personally.
ISTR we've had 4 Williams. I'll check. Yeah, four. And no, the numbering scheme runs through all royal houses. William IV was of a different house to the others. Hell, W4 was the first British monarch, because 1-3 were English monarchs, predating the union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland. The weird part comes if someone names their son James and he becomes James VII, because James I of England was James VI of Scotland and the rule is that the higher number trumps the lower. (7 beats 2. This hasn't previously mattered since Scotland lacked kings or queens with the names in question) Worth mentioning, as well, the monarch's name, called a Regnal Name, has been different to their birth name at least twice since 1901. George VI (HM's father) changed his name to George, for PR purposes, effectively, after the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. George VI's birth name was Albert Frederick Arthur George. His grandfather, Edward VII, was Albert Edward. He changed his name because of his father being Queen Victoria's beloved Prince Albert who died at the early age of 42, plunging her into her deep mourning (and probably depression). This diversion brought to you by Wikipedia, the British Monarchy and the letter S. We now return to your regular thread, in progress... |
