I wish the Club would get someone with some passing military knowledge to do the filecards. I understand that it's not easy and adult collectors are picky but some of them are so fan boy-ish. I have no problem with the club guys using their own names as file names but mixing Enlisted and Officer MOS's make their endeavor look so amateurish. If the writers are going to the trouble of adding the MOS code, they could take it to the next step and make sure that the codes and occupations make some sense. Like a few years ago where Major Storm has an enlisted MOS of Intel Analyst.

That's why I was curious that the card writer left off a rank. Perhaps it was an error (probably), because I had assumed he was Canadian-born, but a citizen of the U.S. now (which is very common). It just makes it hard to place him in the hierarchy - probably an E-4, E-5 or E-6 (as many of the Joe vehicle drivers are)?

In the Commonwealth when a soldier joins the SAS, they drop in rank to 'Trooper' (OR4) and then have to work their way back up. It may seem harsh but the pay is actually more substantial than their Big Army pay. with the bonuses, higher wage & allowances, etc. When they leave or returned to unit, any promotions within the SAS will be adjusted. A special cell within the Admin shop keeps track of their 'shadow career and rank' so they're not hard don by.
So a guy like Skymate may be an OR4 but probably has at least 2-3 years of Big Army soldiering under his belt prior to selection. Big Ben as a Staff Sgt would be a very senior NCO. In the absence of a Troop Commander (Officer), it's usually the Staff Sgt who will lead the entire troop (usually 15 guys). Also one has to bear in mind that the Commonwealth have much less ranks than their US brothers, so there is more of a burden of responsibility and leadership amongst the corporals and sergeants than in the States. I wonder how a US Warrant Officer ranks up with the UK warrant officers. They don't have the equivalent rank or rather they are Sgt Major equivalents.

http://www.yojoe.com/images/resize/w...ajorstorm2.jpg You are right it would only take a little more effort to get it right. I was really excited to see the actual MOS classifications right on the Filecards. They seemed to have gotten away from that the last few years Since 2011.

Beaver was the sole Canadian in AF proper. The US-characters-get-new-birthplaces-and-filenames era of 1985 onwards had several characters from Canada.
UK AF characters are: Brits: Skip Eagle Stakeout Leviathan Dolphin US Sky Raider Surfer Jammer Blades Chopper Swiss Quarrel West German Quickfire East German Scout Swedish Hawkwind Norweigan The Doc Russian Hot Jets French Shark Barracuda Italian Breaker Greek Steeler Dutch Wheels Belgian Sparrowhawk Mexican Gaucho Hunter Spanish Tracker Australian Blast Off New Zealander Kiwi Arab Moondancer Irish Phones Icelandic Stalker as for the club doing more characters in the FSS, i'd expect more O-Ring Nine members before they ever do the Pallitoy originals. SAS Force Stalker, Jammer, Gaucho, Hunter, Red Jackel, Red Laser and Z Force Steeler are all easier to do with simple redecos than the others. That said, I could do a decent fist of an ME Eagle with minimal paint. Airtight's head, 25th Snake Eyes body, Shockblast or Pit Commando gas-mask, Pit Commando helmet, sidearm pistol, Pit Commando body armour, Airtight's shotgun, a grappeling line, an M4 or an MP5. Job's a good 'un. Just paint the hood on Airtight's head grey. (a real LBC move would be to use 25th Torpedo's head and not have a grey hood. Last edited by CapBritain; 03-08-2015 at 03:04 PM.. |

I think they just bypass it and go into officers; i.e. OR-8 and above are considered the same as U.S. Warrant Officers, and then the OF ranks begin (which correspond roughly to our U.S. Officers)...

the Warrant Officers are ranked above Staff Sergeants, below Lieutenants and are most definitely NOT NCOs. (Ed Macy gets really annoyed when the squadron CO calls him an NCO in Apache.) Macy's role was Senior Weapons Officer, the guru of the armaments of the Apache in the squadron, so as well as being qualified to fly front and back seat of the AH64 mk. I, he was responsible for reviewing and critiquing every weapons release on the gun tapes of the squadron's choppers. He had to review every round, rocket or missile fired. He also had to know the ins-and-outs of all aspects of the weapons.

If Red Star was a "Captain" by Russian Army standards (not Navy), then he was of the rank of OF-2. Brekhov, who was a Colonel, was of the rank of OF-5. Note: The 3 offices of Lieutenant (Sr. Lt., Lt. and Jr. Lt.) all ranked as OF-1, the bottom of the officer rung. A Major's rank was OF-3; Lt. Col. was OF-4; etc. etc. So, I guess we can assume that Red Star's rank was the equivalent of the U.S. Army's 1st Lt. (O-2) and that Brekhov was the equivalent of a Lt. Col. Does that sound about right? (Though I suspect the Joes would treat Red Star with the respect of a U.S. Captain, since the titles are so close and he was an ally, not an enemy.) |
