Those secondary MOS positions were always a little crazy. However, I've been reading "Always Faithful Always Forward" by Dick Couch... it's a book about MarSoc training. Very interesting stuff. Special Forces, MARSOC, and I think even the SEALs will let anyone try out for selection. Cooks, radio operators, band members.... anyone can try out. If they're fit enough and can pass the land nav stuff, they can go forward into Special Ops... the idea is that their other skills might just come in handy in the field.

that's true of the UKSF, Paras, Pathfinders and Royal Marines. If you get through whatver variation of Selection they throw at you, (All Arms Commando course for RMC, P Company for Paras, different versions of 'Selection' for UKSF and PF) they'll let you in. Engineers, tank drivers, signallers, whatever.
Captain David Blakely talks about PF selection in his books 'Pathfinder' and 'Maverick One' and says about engineer guys being in PF already and being part of the staff, and doing it when he did. PF like engineers, cuz they're usually able to do vehicle repairs and PF use 'Pinky' Land Rovers a lot - handy to have a mechanic in the patrol when the Pinky breaks down 200 miles behind enemy lines in the Iraqi desert or something. |

According to Overkill's (V1) filecard, he has a flamethrower on his leg. I don't see it, I don't buy it.

I love the way he describes how the 3 man attached Engineering Recce team were completely stumped as to how to repair the Pinkies flat tire...hilarious. I read 'Immediate Action' by Duncan Falconer recently. It's about his time in the Royal Marines, Special Boat Service and 14th Intelligence Detachment aka 'The Det" (which would morph into the Special Reconnaissance Regiment, the UKSG equivalent of the Intelligence Support Activity). He wrote of how it was easier to get a guy to be fit and shoot than it was to get a shooter to be a linguist, electronics expert, boat mechanic etc. It's a very good read and I can also recommend his fiction books too. I've got both but haven't read either in a long while, I was just wondering if Falconer had produced another factual book hence my confusion when searching on Amazon! |

Do you mean "First into Action"? "Immediate Action" is by Andy McNab, though the titles may well have been changed depending on country.

Oops yeah sorry. I've read both in the last month. I haven't seen anything other than fiction of his beyond 'First Into Action'. It's a shame because there's hardly anything about the SBS. I did pick up a few books about the Royal Marines which I haven't got around to yet.
Agreed that it's a shame there's not much around about the SBS - they seem to have managed to remain under the proverbial radar unlike the SAS (fine the later are larger and better funded, or at least were according to First into Action iirc.) I've just bought a couple of books on the SBS (and the units that would later become the SBS) in WW2, which seems to be about all that's available. I've also suggested to Osprey (via their suggest a title link) that a book on the SBS might be timely (as well as updates on their SAS and Flak Jackets/Body Armour books). I imagine that in 5 to 10 years we might hear some more about the SBS's role in the "fight on terror", so I'll bide my time! |

I need to check those out. I seem to remember reading that there were SBS at the Tora Bora battle which struck me as odd since they are maritime based. I realize now they are more SEALs than SWCC.
So where does Lt Dolphin fall in your Joeverse? How about Beaver and Stakeout and Phones. I figure you have them included.

read Maverick One, as well as Pathfinder, Tyroc. It's excellent and as well as talking about PF selection, he talks about his time with 1 Para in Kosovo and Sierra Leone. It ends with him going for SAS selection and the DS coming around with non-disclosure agreements for everyone to sign.
that's why no one from the SBS has done a book! The MoD got very pissy about McNab and Ryan doing Bravo Two Zero and The One That Got Away and after McNab's second book, the clamped down hard on SF-related books. Which is why they both started writing fiction instead. The SBS are also said to hate the SAS and see them as prima donnas... |
