Except that according to Backstop's file card, he and his family moved to Detroit where he took up boxing (and got banned from competing), and wrestling in high school. Going to HS in the States = no QMJHL. Too bad.
However, just to guesstimate, let's say he was 25 years old in the figure's release year of 1987. That means, had he stayed in Canada, he would have been in the QMJHL approximately 1976-1979. If he'd played for his hometown team, that would have been the Montreal Juniors (now known as the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) and he would have played on that team with none other than Denis Savard of Chicago Blackhawks fame. Given his codename, and if there's a hockey association, it implies that he was a goalie... On Metalhead's 1994 filecard, his secondary specialty is listed as "hockey fight analyst." It's funny that the hockey-related Joe is a puck-stopping tank driver, while the hockey-related Cobra is a shot-taking anti-tank specialist. Yep. Too much time on my hands.

The fact he was most likely a goalie is something I don't believe I ever paid attention to.

Primarily, in baseball the backstop is the fence behind home plate, but it's also slang for the catcher position in baseball or the goalie position in ice hockey.

And yes, CapBritain, backstop is a nickname in both hockey and baseball. It definitely implies goalie. If he was a fighting goalie, he was essentially Ron Hextall!

Hahaha! Hexy and Roy were the first two that came to mind for me.
Actually, Hextall would have just begun his reign of terror in about '86 or '87, so you gotta wonder if he really was an inspiration for Backstop. Man, I miss the detail and thought (or potential thought) that went into ARAH...

I just read a copy of the Retailer Preview for the new IDW GI Joe Transformers......ugghhh
The art is hideous. It's by the artist of Image's Godland. I get that it's supposed to ape Jack Kirby but geez, it does not suit Joe or the Transformers at all. The story is cartoonish at best. Very amateurish. I appreciate that the writer tries to fit in as much Joe like easter eggs (the Defiant makes an appearance, all the vehicles used so far are Joe vehicles). Some of the characters are slightly off, Snake Eyes spoke in the "0" issue and Spirit has a Mohawk and is a Cryptology specialist. I'll probably end up buying the series because I'm a completist and it's Joe and I want to support the brand but I cannot see IDW or Hasbro growing the brand with this book. |

That's too bad. The comics no longer have that canon feel to them. Some are better than others and some issues are better than others. After Krake became Cobra Commander I sort of felt lost. Too many unidentifiable characters, who are know characters. Too many name changes, but if Snake-Eyes is talking who is in charge now?

y'know how everyone goes on about the weird secondary specialities like finance clerk, personnel clerk etc.? Well, i had a couple theories on that:
A. Gives the Joes fewer support personnel to have to do security checks on, because they can sort the records/paycheques/whatever themselves. B. Might be to do with their deniable covers at the Motor Pool. C. My Dad told me, if I joined the Army to 'get a trade', something that I could do as a civvie. Maybe that's all they were doing before they became some some badass special forces soldier. Certainly explains Dusty's 'air con repairman' SMS... |

I guess we need an active duty or recently separated to explain how SMS works. Particularly if it falls outside of combat specialties. Off the top of my head I can think of Lady Jaye, Alpine, Jinx, Fast Draw and Skydive. Any others?
