Well I was thinking something current. Like the Yves Rossy Jetman flying wing as a real military application. But I guess if there was such a thing as an experimental military Jetwing, a unit like the Joes would be the ones testing it out. Or they steal on from Cobra and reverse engineer one. Currently I doubt any of the US Spec Ops guys are deploying units with anything of this type, but what do I know.
All sort of problems with this, though: (1) Limited applications: Is there any situation where a Gryphon would be definitively safer, more practical, and tactically/strategically useful than standard HAHO/HALO insertion? And if there is such a situation, is it common/relevant enough to justify the cost of acquisition, logistics, training, etc. (2) Ill-defined advantages over existing and cheaper alternatives: A commercial "wingsuit" that can be bought off-the-shelf can allow a jumper to "fly" up to 28 km (the current world record for "wingsuit flying, absolute distance"). Sure, the unpowered version of the Gryphon can theoretically almost double that distance, but the costs (both in terms of financial/logistical and training requirements) are probably out of proportion to whatever benefits it can provide over commercial man-portable gliding solutions. |

Thanks Troynos, that helps alot then. Where did you find this info? I couldnt find it on the 2003-2005 filecards, so I just guessed. OK now I see, grrr Script was so small.

A few years ago, a European start-up was marketing a composite glider wing/HALO parachute system called the Gryphon to the German military (see attached pic), but I'm fairly certain it never got past the proof-of-concept testing phase. The idea was that an airborne soldier would jump from 30,000+ ft. and using small engines, achieve limited powered flight to get some distance (supposedly up to 200 km) before deploying the chute. An unpowered version of the Gryphon would supposedly allow the parachutist to glide some 50 km.

With all the Joe contraptions we just have to suspend belief and imagine they are beyond the laws of physics and US Govt Bureaucracy. The wing suit is probably a more likely step to be taken like the one worn by Snake-Eyes in Resolute. A jetpack like the JUMP would be useful for hovering over and recon but carries the little gun which I suppose is more likely a laser pointer. A glider like the C.L.A.W. or the one Barrel-Roll originally came with would be useful if it carried a payload.

I'm doing a fan-fic in a new modern-era, not related to anything else universe, anyone willing to give my Joe line up a look and tear it to shreds if needed? It's a lot smaller team and trying to be pretty realistic. (the story itself is based on the UKSF equivalent of the Joes, but they do work together...)

Ah, I failed to clarify, I was speaking strictly about speculative reasons on why the German military passed on the Gryphon, not why a version of the Joes (or any fictional military unit for that matter) wouldn't have something like it in the interest of incorporating cool-looking, bleeding edge tech designs.
I mean with the Joes and Cobras, all bets are off, tech-wise. |

This is precisely where I place both BR and Black Out (before he defected to Cobra). They work as a counter sniper team. The PJ specialty is an odd addition so I just ignore it but since most Joes have dual MOS I suppose you could keep that as a secondary if you wanted.

The GI Joe team (or Joint Services Special Task Force Black)
Hawk – Colonel – CO Duke – Sergeant-Major – Green Beret – Senior NCO Flint – Green Beret – Sergeant Beach Head – Ranger – Sergeant Stalker – Green Beret – Sergeant Snake Eyes – Delta Force – Sergeant Grunt – Ranger – Sergeant Zap – Ranger – Anti-tank weapons sergeant Lowlight – Green Beret – Sniper –sergeant Scarlett – CIA officer – Intelligence specialist Mainframe – US Army – computer specialist Breaker – Ranger radio operator – Specialist Dial-Tone – Ranger radio operator – Specialist Falcon – Green Beret – Lieutenant (XO) Leatherneck – US Marine rifleman – Gunnery Sergeant Gung-Ho – US Marine rifleman – Gunnery Sergeant Wet-Suit – US Navy SEAL – Petty Officer Torpedo – US Navy SEAL – Master Chief Petty Officer Tracker – US Navy SEAL – Petty Officer Shipwreck – SWCC Coxswain – Chief Petty Officer Wild Bill – 160th SOAR helicopter pilot – Warrant Officer Lift-Ticket – 160th SOAR helo pilot – Chief Warrant Officer Clutch – Ranger vehicle driver – Sergeant Crankcase – Ranger vehicle driver – Corporal Spearhead – Ranger point-man – Sergeant Hit&Run – Delta Force – sergeant Recoil – Ranger – sergeant Hollow-point – US Marine Scout-sniper – Sergeant Airborne – Ranger – Sergeant Doc – US Army medic – Captain Lifeline – US Navy Corpsman – Petty Officer Lady Jaye – Intelligence Support Activity – undercover operations Footloose – Ranger – Sergeant Rock’n’Roll – Ranger machine gunner – Corporal Roadblock – Green Beret machine gunner – Sergeant Short-Fuse – Ranger Mortars – Sergeant Ripcord – Ranger – Staff Sergeant Crazy Legs – Ranger – Sergeant I know Lady Jaye being Activity is probably a stretch, but I wanted her in the unit without her being CIA. Snake Eyes is not a ninja, he's just a badass Delta guy with some martial arts moves. I made Flint a sergeant because I wanted Duke as the senior NCO with only Falcon and Hawk above him in the field troops role, although Hawk doesn't get out in the field much and neither do Scarlett or Mainframe. |
