I thought Spirit was Navajo. Unless the Tiwa tribe are an offshoot of the Navajo. I say this because in Captives of Cobra, his cousin(niece?) was participating in a rite of passage to womanhood, the Sunrise Ceremony, which is a Navajo tradition.
Navajo women participate in this ceremony when they first start their menstruation cycles.

I always assumed Taos meant Taos Pueblo therefore Tao's Indian. But I do remember thinking he was Navajo at some point. Probably because version three has him wearing "authentic Navajo boots". Still if the Joes do get another Navajo Indian he should be a Marine Radio operator. Still cool fact about Spirit. He would most likely speak Spanish. I wonder if Zulu had that in his character bio. I'm sure he does.

He may well be Navajo or Dine, as they prefer to be called, but it's never really been clear to me. There were so many tribes that lived in that area, and a crossover of cultures and customs, but if Hama intended for him to have come from the Taos Pueblo, then perhaps he intended him to be of Tiwa descent.

I would have to assume Taos meant Pueblo (Tiwa) but as a kid I only ever knew of Apaches and Navajo which also converge in that same exact area. However Pueblo doesn't connote the same level of deference as Apache or Navajo or Comanche. I wonder what Hama had in mind for him? He does feature fairly prominently throughout Joe lore as is he is based off someone Hama knew personally.
He created Airborne as well who is Navajo, but never fleshed him out much. I don't know if he created Altitude who is Apache, and I'm sure he didn't create Dart who we guess is Ojibwe (Chippewa).

If he meant Taos Pueblo, I just wonder why he didn't specify that, because it would make a big difference. Most Navajo live in Arizona and New Mexico, but the Taos Puebloans are a separate tribe, generally referred to as the Anasazi or Ancient Enemy by the Navajo. Or maybe he didn't really know much about the town or pueblo for that matter. I'm still trying to decide in which direction I want to go with Spirit's heritage.

Ok So I got my crappy Tan Grunt figure. He's nothing special and the oversized helmet does take away from the figure as does the unpainted neck. But I can see them trying to through a cost savings figure in there.
Anyway I wonder had they just straight up and claimed he is Sokerk and made a corresponding filecard would I like him more? Who knows. I am definitely using him as Sokerk but he needs a new filecard. I tend to use all the international South American Joe characters as Americans from the US as their names suggest. John Murphy is not from Argentina. At any rate He's something I cooked up trying my best to translate the Sokerk filecard which is mostly utter rubbish. What the hell does Sokerk mean anyway? Sokerk doesn't mean anything, any more than Redmack or Topson or Manleh do.
Sokerk's filecard is basically identical to Estopim from Brazil's. Here's one I made for Estopim using Google translate. I added the line about recruited to Comandos Em Acao and the weapons qualification stuff. |

There must be some meaning to these. The Brazilian code names translate the Argentinians don't. Estopim = Fuse. All the others translate as well. Trigger, Lightning, Flying Scorpion, Black buzzard. But Shimik, Manleh, Sokerk must mean something. Colloquially or not. Nice filecard btw. Your Estopim at least seems a little more polished than my Sokerk.

thanks. i've done some for Redmack, Manleh, Shimik, Topson, Glenda, TNT, Urzor, Gatillo, Relampago, Kangor, Tigor, Leontor, Biomassa, Biosfera, Biologico, Corrosion and Pollution (the Brazilian eco-warriors Dee-Jay and their version of Cesspool, which I later realised was basically the same as Cesspool's), Letal, Mortal, Invasor, Abutre Negro, Escorpio Voador, Aguia Comando, Pegasus, Albatross and Werewolf (Cobra Snake Eyes V2).
If anyone's interested, I'll post them. |
