Stalker is no longer a ranger.
His newest filecard, that comes with the UBP, has him as a Ranger but his primary is infantry and he has two secondaries: medic and interpreter (????). The card lists his schooling as: basic combat training, advanced infantry training, U.S. Army Language School and Intelligence School. Stalker's no longer a Ranger, he's a pure Green Beret now. edit: Looking back, his original card is the same as his 2008 UBP one. It doesn't list Ranger school. But he's called a Ranger, but never went to ranger school? Now whether or not he's a Green Beret, as in Special Forces qualified is another question. Considering all his language skills, demolition skills, and training in Intelligence and as a medic, he would be a great candidate for Special Forces. Only Claymore would arguably be more qualified than Stalker for selection into Special Forces... but like Claymore, no mention of Special Forces qualification has ever been given for Stalker. Being a Green Beret is a really big deal. Looking back, I sort of have to think: Who the heck is Drop Zone? If anyone should have been in Special Forces, it should have been Stalker and Claymore. Even Beach-Head, who is one of my favorites, doesn't seem to really fit the profile of a Special Forces soldier like Stalker does. Beach-Head is a classic Airborne Ranger NCO - Tough, physically fit, excellent soldier. But Beach-Head has no language skills to speak of. Perhaps it should have been Stalker who was placed in charge of Tiger Force and given Special Forces Training. Similarly, Claymore should most certainly be a Green Beret. His qualifications in Languages, Demolition, Sniper, Hand-to-hand combat, Counter-Terrorism, and an Ivy League Education are classic for selection into Special Forces. He's the kind of guy the Green Beret's try to recruit. Perhaps only Flint is more well rounded, and even that is arguable. Interestingly, Claymore went to Dartmouth for college, but there is no ROTC department at Dartmouth. It's certainly unclear how he was commissioned, but it may have been through OCS after college.

I always thought of Hit n Run as a Ranger. Footloose was a cool cat but I felt they dropped the ball in creating his file card with all of those qualities and not being named a Ranger on his card was a major lack of development. I just can't see a guy going straight infantry when he could do so much more. Of course it's like the Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now, and how he could have been a Gen. and went back for Air borne training pissing the top brass off. It almost killed him but he wanted to do it and didn't want to follow their plan!

Stalker is, and always will be, a Ranger. I just thought it funny that his cards don't list ranger school at all.
What exactly is Snake-Eyes? Take away the ninja and he was a Commando. What exactly is that? He's Ranger-qualified. But is he anything else?

I'm pretty certain that it's listed on Hit & Run's File card that he is a Ranger.
Footloose was later put on Slaughter's Marauders, and though that doesn't make him a Ranger, I think being put on one of the Special Joe Teams is some kind of acknowledgment of his skills. Back to Claymore for just a second - if you've read his file card, could he be C.I.A. - Special Activities Division? His work seems really clandestine/covert to simply be an Army Ranger. He doesn't work regular hours or regular assignments. Could he really be former Army who was recruited into a covert agency like C.I.A.?

He's a LRRP, which means he went through the Recondo school at Nha Trang (in Vietnam). That's more than just Ranger School. It also seems, from "Master & Apprentice", that he, Storm Shadow, and Scarlet were all assets that were used by the same agency that used Duke between '94 and 2000. It's certainly unclear how much extra training Snake-Eyes would have had... but his inability to verbally communicate would have made Special Forces school impossible.

I always thought of Hit & Run as 10th Mountain Division. But should probably get JUMP school qualified. Footloose is. |

His gear would suggest mountainous work (the harness, the duffel with grappel).

I assume the Joes don't just gather all their own intel unless they are in the field for one mission. But I assume there is a nice subterranean room somewhere, where Hawk and Colton are briefed by CIA Deputy Directors an highly classified information. The CIA, with the Joe Planners, would then come up with some plan of action they want to use the Joes to perform. I assume most of the Joe intel is gathered at NSA and people with way more authority tell the Joes what need to be done. I think part of the Joe team functions like the SAD guys. Particularly the Intelligence and Covert Operations Joes. Usually those SAD guys aren't blowing up the bridges, that's when they use SEALS and Force Recon. Most of those SAD guys are probably former Elite Forces. Claymore would make a perfect SAD type. |
