Not sure exactly what you mean, but I think Top Side, Deep Six, and Rampart are all a little out of place in the G.I. Joe Team. I mean, why aren't they SEALs? It doesn't seem like the Navy would have too much else to offer a Special Forces unit like G.I. Joe... well, maybe the Sea Bees or some of the Pilots.
I think they should send those guys through BUD/S and make them SEALs like they did with Shipwreck. But as Troynos is often fond of reminding us, they should give them camo uniforms and not just make them repainted divers. I think rampart's character would've been better used as a seabee or something more specific to the Navy. As far as Deep Six goes- I think they should've have sent him to BUDS instead of Shipwreck. Shipwreck is a sailor not a diver. If you look at his filecard you'll see that he served in 'Nam "battling river pirates, smugglers & insurgents". Sounds like he'd make a good combat boat operator also. |

If he was that good, why didn't he get pushed into the Rangers or officer school, jungle warfare or anything. Same with Footloose. And to an extent Hit & Run. What does the Joe team need with infantry soldiers when they have Rangers and SEaLs?

Okay, cool. I was pretty sure it wasn't the Ranger tab, but couldn't think/find what it was.

Topside's filecard says it all-served on a ship that delivered a Joe team to their mission site. i think this qualifies him as a combat boat operator and that he would have been a perfect choice to package with the 2005 Joe Moray instead of Flint/ Beachhead. Could've used the 2004 Chief Torpedo as the second figure.

Sounds like he'd make a good combat boat operator also. Good call on Shipwreck being a Combatant Craft Crewman, he'd fit pretty good into that role. The Joe Navy is pretty screwed up. The Joes are supposed to be a covert unit, but by having Navy and Airforce elements (boats and planes), that means they need a ton of non-combat support staff. That makes it pretty hard to be completely covert if you have a couple hundred strong support staff of mechanics, sailors, flight crew, etc.. Even having any kind of vehicle fleet involves having a support crew. Clutch, Steeler and Wild Bill weren't responsible for the maintenance and repair of their vehicles were they? The vehicles were cool and all, but practically for a unit like the Joe-team, they really wouldn't function. That's why I liked guys like Crankcase and Wild Bill who were groundpounders (ranger qualified) before becoming drivers. This way, they could be inserted with the ground units and be used as the extractors, they'd find enemy vehicles and drive the team home.

Grunt always kind of bothered me. There was never anything "special" about him. He's not a ranger, he's straight infantry. How did he find his way onto an elite special forces team?

As for Footloose, his appearance has always made him seem more like a jungle trooper than just a regular foot soldier. That's how I used him anyway. His realistic look made him one of my favorites. |

Airborne (Even though he went to Falcon Glider school), Ranger, OCS? |

A platoon sargeant for the Greenshirts (if you use 'em) would be a good role for Grunt, the overachiever who underachieved (so special as normal infantry that he got onto the Joe team, but never went on for additional training).
Footloose's look always made him seem more special then just infantry, so he looked/worked as a Jungle Trooper or straight Ranger.

I know there's some controversy over the need for Greenshirts on the Joes, but if we assume they're part of the team, I guess Grunt works ok as a squad leader or platoon sergeant for them. I think his title was changed to Infantry Squad Leader at some point, wasn't it?

He basically resembles a Greenshirt, especially the TRU SRO version.

Short-Fuze's original '82 filecard has him at E-4. His 2008 filecard has him at E-5. He got a promotion.
