Psyche-out in my teen years was the Operations Center Commander (Think of the TOC in the tv show THE UNIT). Basically it was from what I observed on how we conducted the Civil Air Patrol preparedness exercises during the mid-80's in the middle of nowhere at small airports with the entire Wing. With different Squadrons and Flights conducting, SAR of downed pilots with specialized equiptment, first aid, transport of victims. Also a fun exercise, "Operation: Enforcing Airways" against drug-traffickers, forcing them down, retrieving & detaining them. Combined Communications between HQ's, Tower, Air (Helicopters & single/twin engine aircraft) and ground vehicles (ambulance). Combined missions with the Cadet & Senior Members of Civil Air Patrol pilots along with the Air Force. So I just translated that experience over to JOE "OC". For my teen-years Joe-verse "OC" consisted of Psyche Out (also used as PR Officer if the media came snooping around), Mainframe, Scoop (PR present day DVIDS) and myself (Takedown). Which, meant the Communication guys were in the field: Breaker, Dialtone, Sneakpeek, Dee-jay, Recoil and Bullhorn. This stroll down memory lane reminds me the answer I gave to anyone who quoted that 90's REM song... "Whats the frequency, Kenneth"? My reply was always 121.5. Everyone was speechless that I replied back so promptly with a frequency and it was not lyrics to the song. It is the emergency frequency from any aircraft's black box that is transmitting an emergency. WE CAN FIND IT. RESCUE SIR! -Rescue Flight 14111.

Psyche-Out for me is the mission planner.
He's spent extensive time in the field, former Green Beret. Now he uses his experience/training to provide profiles on/for the mission operatives and their targets. He'll go out in the field for psy ops missions as needed.

Thanks Tank for the new info
Here's something I never knew. The GI Joe Choose Your Adventure Books had original Joe characters. The conceit being that the reader assumes the identity of this new Joe. YOJOE.COM | Books and Audio Recordings Interesting... |

I read/had one of those. I think. I vaguely remember it.

Those books are a new area to choose codenames from. Like using codenames that have some relevance to Joe history instead of just making something up, which works too.

They gave the reader terrible codenames: Outlaw, Wiseguy, Sting, Lightning, Hotshot. Presto, Wheels, Commando
Break-In and Dog Ear are kinda cool, though. |

I never saw any of those? I most assuredly would have bought them. But then again I didn't care for reading too much as a kid.

I'm pretty sure I had one. The one with Dusty and Quick Kick on the cover looks very familiar.
I really wish there was a series of Joe novels like there is for Star Wars. The IDW thing was just bad. But a series of novels done like Star Wars could really work for Joe.

Agreed, it's a shame that all the novels and book tie ins are almost always children's books.
