You'd be surprised to find how some of the "futuristic" GI Joe and Cobra vehicles were actually based by Rudat on vehicle designs from the 1960s. Besides the Night Raven (the M-21's last official flight was in 1966), the Defiant Space Shuttle wasn't actually based on any of the real Space Shuttle designs... it's based on a much, much older spacecraft, the X-23A PRIME (a subscale atmospheric reentry test vehicle from the mid-1960s).

Wow, you're right. The Defiant has the exact same shape as the X-23A. Pretty interesting. Apparenlty the Joes like to pick up the oddball concepts and run with them. What about the mobile headquarters? Any experimental prototypes out there? ;)

Close. The Night Raven was based on the M-21 reconnaissance craft (a variant of the Lockheed A-12, predecessor of the SR-71 Blackbird). The M-21 even had a "piggyback" recon drone (click here for a picture of the M-21 and its piggyback D-21 drone), which was replicated in the Night Raven.

Back to the whole Night Raven thing. At first glance, it is much more like the M21/D21 combo, what with its delta-wing design, twin-engine power, flat black radar-absorbing paint job, and detachable auxiliary craft. A second look and one realizes how drastically modified it is. The Raven has squared-off jet intakes and housing, a flat nose, forward canards, outward-tilted stabilizers, and a manned piggy-back craft. Ordinance is another story, I suppose, but I wouldn't know enough about the M21 or the SR71 to flag the Raven's rear-facing guns or its missile modules. The more recent Night Raven reminds me a little bit of the Star Bird. It looks not much like, but it reminds me of it somehow.

Guys, sorry to interrupt but I wanted to share some pics with you... there were a couple of characters from Sigma 6 that I wanted to add to my Joeverse, but obviously Desert Wolf and Lockdown were never available in ME style or any other 1:18 style.
Desert Wolf is an Airborne Ranger, and I always liked Lockdown... plus I wanted Flint in his non-beret, long hair, frighteningly cool Sigma Continuity head. So... I had Sean Hunter at Hunter arts works make me some. I sent him the Sigma 6 figures and he worked his magic and made smaller, 1:18 copies. Thought y'all might want to see them.

Wow! How much would something like that set me back?
I always imagined Flint to be a little thin in the top-back. MPB.

Thanks, buddy. I'm really looking forward to getting these.
These will be available for order from his site for $4.00 per head plus shipping. If you wanted another head commissisioned, that's a lot more money.
