Kamakura's origin had him working special ops with a 6 man squad that Duke and Chuckles put together. The team was killed by Firefly in a special mission. The team seemed like a smaller Joe team when the Joe team was disbanded.
There's a reason we have all the service branches, they all play a very important part in making missions successful and bringing all our boys home. Sean Collins (Kamakura) also stated that he was Snake-Eyes' Godson, which is something I didn't remember before. I think before his selection for "Hammer Team" Sean must have went through Special Forces School - that qualification was listed elsewhere by DDP, which means he's probably also Ranger qualified and who knows what else. My only point is that he's the 6th confirmed Green Beret. I just think it would make a great 6 pack of figures to have all the official Green Berets on one team. Drop Zone is a cool character. I think of Kamakura like Nightwing... he's everything about Batman you like with less baggage. Kamakura is similar. Just thought it was a neat bit of character info.

Yeah, I mentioned him, but as Oliver pointed out he was making up for a poor attitude/actions prior to that (similar to Cool Breeze).

Yeah, funny you should mention that, I just reread "Master & Apprentice" this afternoon after Church. The unit was called the "Hammer Team" and it had a former Russian Spetnaz guy as the group leader, and FBI agent on special assignment, to Army soldiers, and one Marine. They were supposed to be like a smaller version of G.I. Joe.
Yeah, Kamakura is interesting, has a good backstory and motivation. I'd forgotten that "Snake Eyes godson" part.

Did DDP create Kamakura or was he one of those characters that came from Valor vs. Venom/Spytroops that they added into the run? Interesting note, the name Kamakura he chose from a famous samurai. Didn't samurai and ninjas not get along?

Yeah, I agree. He had to have been something special in the service for Duke to select him as part of Hammer Team.

Didn't samurai and ninjas not get along? In "Master & Apprentice", the word 'Kamakura' is said to have meant "The Golden Age of Ninjas" or something like that. The main point about the rivalry between Samurai and Ninjas is in a few comments made between Budo and Kamakura, but it's done in a friendly way. In the last pages of Issue #4 of the miniseries, he says that he's going to take the name Kamakura in honor of the golden age of ninjas. He's the last Ninja of the clan.

That's interesting. I didn't realize that was the same guy. He's a great villain. The Spetnaz was no joke. Those guys were tough.

I could have sworn that Kamakura had said the name had something to do with samurai, but the "golden age of ninjas" makes more sense. I always liked how Hawk referred to him, the "green power ranger". Kamakura was a pretty good character, I always liked him.

So my vintage got bigger.
Got Jinx on the way. Got Hardball. I always seem to just barely miss out on Tiger Force Duke, Grid Iron and Ambush, but someday they will be mine. Got the Tiger Force box set unopened for a real good price. Happy with that one. Got Lifeline (no accessories) from my Hiss Tank secret santa, that was cool.

Well, hopefully that's settled...
Anyway, so about the 6 official Special Forces soldiers in G.I. Joe - and I'll admit there is plenty of evidence to support the others as potential Green Berets. Would any one be interested in a 6-Pack of the Green Berets - call them "Alpha Team" or something (Like a Special Forces A-Team). They've got a good mix of specialties. Drop Zone could even work as a sniper because he's a Special Forces weapons expert - not just a heavy machine gunner. Flint could even work as a Sharp Shooter (8" line file card). They could get some matching camo. Drop Zone would need a new uniform design, and Kamakura might be better in a more commando uniform (like Snake-Eyes, obviously). I think it could work really well, and I'd buy it. What about y'all? Duke \ Flint \ Falcon \ Beachhead \ Drop-Zone \ Kamakura And Colton? Even though he's old. |

Which begs the question: If the original Joe was a Green Beret, why aren't there more Green Berets in G.I. Joe?
