So I remember a very long time ago in this thread "we" were trying to discuss why Recoil had a codename of Recoil, even tho he doesnt have a weapon that recoils.
This quote was posted before I joined. I read it while I while catching up in November of that year... Quote:
If you talk on the land-line phone for a long period of time, when you hang up the phone, the cord is all tangled up, so you "Re-coil" the cord. I would like to propose that he was the Radio (RTO) guy for a LRRP "squad". Which in the late 80's Lurpers were LRS Teams of the 75th Regiment. Right? Recoil, He's been MIA in my joeverse for about 20 years. I finally re-found him as a favorite. Does Recoil appear after Issue 113-114 after he was wounded in Benzheen?

I always liked Recoil, but I don't remember him after 113. I don't recall him being in the DDp series either and they included everyone. Although I'm sure his name is on that map they used showing where everyone was deployed.

Thanks. Loose Cannon. Tho it is ironic, When people ask him what his job in the army is, he tells them, "Being quiet". An RTO's job being quiet? A type of guy who says enough to get the job done. YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Recoil

Recoil was always one of my favorites. Even as a child, I knew he as a Ranger - and every Army brat knows that "Ranger" is Army for "Awesome, Tough, Fit... a Real Soldier." Certainly LRSC units do use coms to relay information, but that isn't really their primary function. Really, I think hasbro intended him to be the "next-generation" of Stalker/Beach-Head. He also came with a whole suitcase full of claymore mines... but he's not an EOD like Tunnel Rat.
Like any good representative from the Ranger Regiment, Recoil is an all-around Infantryman. He is one of the worlds best at "Shoot, Move, and Communicate"... and as a recon specialist, he shoots, moves and communicates with a high degree of stealth and very little support.

I'm just going through the 1985 cards - no particular reason i started that year. I don't know if any of these were mentioned before, but I thought I'd share what I have researched.
Airtight very likely named after comic writer/artist Paul Kirchner (Kurt Schnurr), born in new Haven Connecticut. It seemed more obscure, and I don't recall seeing it mentioned anywhere else before. TOMAX and XAMOT's file card says that is their code name, and that their file names are classified. To me, that indicates that their names were crafted in order to solidify the "mirror image" theme they are going for. They could possibly have been named with the same first initial like with most twins. Heavy Metal's names are riddled with tank references: Heavy Metal - referring to armor. First name Sherman - a US WWII tank. Incidentally, the tank was named after a WWI General. Last name Guderian - named after Heinz Guderian, the foremost pro-tanks guy in WWII Germany. "Heavy Metal" was also the name of a periodic publication which featured Paul Kirchner. Thus, there may be two Kirchner references in 1985 characters. Shipwreck and SGT Slaughter both have a liking for Thule, Greenland, where a USAF base is. QK possibly named after famous US and Japanese Generals, or maybe US General and Japanese Admiral. Crankcase: This may be a stretch, but Elwood, Indiana (the city) is relatively close to Indianapolis, IN - where people drive fast for a living. CGs are paid the equivalent of E-4, which is way too low for anyone with a degree in law or accounting. Just sayin', T & X. Eels, Snow Serpents, and Lampreys are all Eels of different levels according to their file cards. ... more to come... maybe...

I started to look into 1982 and 1983 cards. I didn't find much noteworthy that hasn't been mentioned before. It's interesting that HISS drivers are O-5 grade. That's rather high. It's like the salary of a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. I looked up the 2008 version, and it's still the same. The 2008 HISS Commander is not given a rank, though. Generally, a tank crew has more enlisted members, and one high-enlisted or an officer as the TC.

That use to bother me. Now I treat only Rip-It as an 0-5 as I do to my Cobra Unit commanders; Skullbuster, Snow-Serpent Commander; Claymore.
