Did the SF Groups already have designated Support Companies back then? Because that could be a way for Breaker to have been directly involved with Project GAMMA operations without being actually SF himself (he could have been with the 5th SFG Support Company's Signal Detachment, had it already existed then).

"Declining volunteer rates and assignement restrictions gravely hampered attempts to keep the 5th Special Forces Group up to strength. Already authorized were grade substitutions up to three levels and the direct in-country recruitment of non-Special Forces arrivals at the 22d and 90th Replacement Battalions." Due to attrition, most junior officers reporting for duty were 2LTs and some teams were commanded by lieutenants and some teams had no master sergeants. By the middle of 1968 "...almost 25 percent [of replacements] were not even Special Forces-qualified." I suppose Breaker could have arrived in Vietnam as an RTO in a conventional infantry unit and then worked with SF as a non-SF qualified replacement but I also think it's plausible that he voluteered for SF as well. Also: A Special Forces Group consisted of an HHC, Signal Company and four SF Companies (A-D). From '63-65 some had an Aviation Company. A Company had 16 operational detachments (1 HQ, 3 B-Teams, 12 A-Teams) and an administrative detachment. From '68 A-Teams increased from 12 to 14 men, adding a Civic Action/Pys0ps Officer (1LT) and a CA/PO Specialist (Spec5). Last edited by Tanksmasher; 07-08-2011 at 08:46 PM.. |

You know, now that I think about it, the use of non-SF personnel as field-contingent replacements for essential basic skills in SF units could also explain how Snake-Eyes, Stalker, and Storm-Shadow ended up reporting to MACV in early 1968, prior to the Tet Offensive. It wasn't really made explicitly clear why they were reporting there (at least from what I remember, I don't have the TPB right now), could be they were supposed to perform intelligence-gathering duties and they were selected because of their LRRP/LRP backgrounds.

Has anyone else looked at/read the IDW book "Tales from the Cobra Wars"? I'm almost finished with it. It's a bunch of different short stories based in the new IDW continuity. Some of them have been pretty good, and they do offer some great insight into the some of the characters have been changed in the IDW continuity.

It's a prose book collecting various GI Joe short stories. One of the stories (featuring Skidmark, IIRC) was previewed in the IDW GI Joe comic books a few months back.

Yeah. Not all the stories are great, but on the whole it's pretty good. Duke is the star of most of them, but the one with Skid-Mark was really good. Might be worth your time... it would at least be good discussion fodder for this thread.
