Don't know if this has been addressed before in this thread, but what do you guys make of Ace v2?
He seems to be a different character from the original Ace, as he has a different filename ("Wendall Armbruster") and birthplace ("Seattle, Washington"). The original 1983 Ace's filename was "Brad Armbruster" and birthplace was "Providence, Rhode Island." And while Joes' "jobs" can and have changed with subsequent releases, I think the difference in their specialties (the original Ace was a fighter pilot, Ace v2 was a helicopter pilot) is pronounced enough that the case can be made that they're two different characters. Anybody know definitively if this was some sort of mistake, a deliberate attempt to rewrite the 1983 character's history, or a new character altogether?

I see no reason why you can't make him a relative but you'd have to change the code name of course. We can't have two Aces flying in the pattern!

Without looking at the filecard I'd have said he's a different person (probably a relative due to the name) who has used his skills in a slightly different theatre, but after looking at the filecard I get the feeling it's the same Ace, and that he's just also quite capable of flying the Battle Copter as well as a fixed wing attack jet.

Still, it's not as if GI Joe vs Cobra: The Essential Guide is accepted across fandom as a canon or reliable resource (I know I don't), but so far, the circumstantial evidence is that they were likely intended to be the same guy (they did revert to the original "Brad Armbruster" filename and "Providence, Rhode Island" birthplace with subsequent versions of Ace). And JMM's GI Joe Comic Home Page doesn't mention a "Wendall Armbruster," in the GI Joe Characters A-Z section either, whilst listing the aforementioned Airbornes and Lifelines as different guys (while an "unofficial" fan project, I'd consider JMM's site as a much more reliable resource than Hidalgo's book, since it actually lists its sources and doesn't conflate the comics and cartoon continuities). I do think the room is there for them to be interpreted as being two different but likely familially-related guys. Yeah, unless explicitly stated in the filecard or in one of the mainline cartoon or comic book continuities, my default interpretation of Joes with the same surname, even somewhat uncommon surnames like Armbruster (it's ranked 6,205 in terms of popularity according to the US White Pages phone directory), is that they're unrelated and the similarity in surnames is coincidence. Being related to another Joe is significant enough a character feature that I'd expect it to be mentioned somewhere in the filecard or the various ancillary media. Still, having them as relatives (cousins, brothers) seems like a fairly reasonable assumption to make if one were to distinguish them as separate characters, owing to the uniqueness of the surname. Now here's something somewhat related to the Ace v2 issue:
I think most people consider Mercer v1 and Mercer v2 as being the same guy, despite the vastly different filenames and birthplaces ("Felix Stratton" and "Spencer, West Virginia," for the former; "Richard Cecil" and "Richmond, Virginia" for the latter) as well as slightly different affiliations (v1 was a member of Sgt. Slaughter's Renegades, v2's filecard mentions that he was a former member of Sgt. Slaughter's Marauders). I consider them the same guy, myself (just easier that way). Any theories as to why most Joe fans (of the ones I've talked to here on the 'tank and elsewhere) consider them to be one and the same guy despite all the glaring differences? Do you consider one a cover identity? Some sort of "witness protection" program identity change-up? Did this ever get brought up in the later comics for a No-Prize? |

My ace V2 is Joker... Ace's cousin. Total variation in personality. Joker is out going, attention seeking, pretty much the class clown.

Guys, I'd like to talk about Bullet-Proof for a minute,a nd I could really use your help...
So lately I've been thinking about doing a SWAT/CQB Team. I'm basically thinking of using the roster from the 2008 Club SWAT Team, and just updating it with ME style figures and a few more Joes. 1. Bullet-Proof 2. Shockwave 3. Bullhorn 4. Low-Light 5. Long Arm 6. Wide Scope And I may add some more... the new "Law" has a really great Police Vest. Anyway, Bullet-Proof seems like a good choice for a Team Leader. Sure-Fire was obviously a potential candidate, but I use him as my overall Joe Police/CID/SWAT commander... so I figure Bullet-Proof could serve well as the SWAT Commander. So what can we figure out about this guy? He's from the U.S. Marshal service, and the fact that he's considered an expert on SWAT operations, he's probably from the Marshal's Special Operations Group. I don't know a lot about those guys, but from what I could find on the internet, they're the main SWAT/SRT unit for the USMS. It also lists that he's qualifed to pilot the Apache helicopter... was he possibly prior service as an Army Aviation Officer? It's interesting that he was the commander of the Joe's DEF, but he came from the Marshal service rather than the DEA... However, in the body of the filecard, it says he was an Officer in the DEA... sounds like he led a FAST team, which is pretty awesome. Those guys supposedly have a lot of former Army SF guys working for them. To me, it seems like he would be one of the better CQB shooters on the whole Joe Team. He's not a sniper like Low-Light or Barrell Roll, but I bet he's tough to beat with a sub-maching gun or a pistol... probably ranks right up there with Bullhorn and Sure-Fire.
