Being a NJ guy, I liked the idea of the Joes being based in nearby Staten Island, and Cobra has a couple Springfields not too far away to base themselves in. I would expect them to be headquartered around an established military base rather than out in the middle of nowhere. For the first few years while the team was smaller, NY area worked. But as they grew and got bigger vehicles they needed to be out closer to area 51. So Pit v 3 made sense after the team got huge and drove gigantic vehicles.

I thought the cartoon HQ was based on the toy as well, just a full-scale version of it.

Can't remember. I'd like to say that they used it to channel the "anti-weather dominator" beam from the mirrors during the Revenge of Cobra mini-series, but I think I might be misremembering.

The Dreadnoks saw the Joes there once and trashed a couple Skystrikers.

I'm still partial to Pit III and then the "Rock." IDW pit is just a Pit III wannabe. I missed Pit I and Pit II but they weren't big enough.
Still I think there is such a thing as too big, for such a small unit. There never seemed to be any Green Shirts with Pit III. The Rock and IDW's Pit seem to address that.

I like the PIT I & II, mainly because they remind me of the Marvel comics. In terms of the coolest, I think the Rock is probably it, though curiously we don't see all that much of it (which is a shame as I would love to see more of the design).
Same question for the Rock (though we don't know where it is) - where do they keep the aircraft? |

I thought the Rock was shown with a small airstrip built on the mountain?

DDP published a diagram in one of the Data Desk Handbooks, but I don't remember if it ever addressed the issue of aircraft hangars. I suppose even if the Rock didn't have aircraft facilities of its own, the Joes presumably used Wyoming, Montana, or Idaho Air National Guard bases (IIRC, the Rock was somewhere in Yellowstone National Park). |

The use of McGuire kind of made the concept of "secret" disappear.

I love the pit I. Ever since looking at that diagram in issue 1. In fact, summer before last, I started building it out of quarter inch plywood. Hadn't worked on it since, but it's pretty big.
