Let me ask you guys a question. I was looking at the early marvel issues to see when the letters page started ("postbox the pit" I think it was called). I didn't see any letter pages from issue 1 to 11 (but I'm missing #9), but in issue 12, it says something about being back and couldn't do the letters page last month due to the story running long. So anybody know for sure, did issue 12 have the first letters page?

I have no idea... I've long since lost my original issues of the Marvel run but I don't recall seeing any letters pages before issue #12 (that might be because the editors didn't think the book would last past the first 10 issues or so... letters pages were reserved for on-going titles). The TPBs are no help in this question, of course, since they don't reprint the letters pages.
But I really like the way the originals are presented in the TPB's with the covers in the right place. The ddp and now disavowed tradebacks (at least the first one) run all the issues together. I like it better knowing where one was supposed to end and the next start, just makes a lot more sense to me, even when the story arc continues. I noticed tonight that the first frontline tradeback had the covers in the right place though.

I was actually pretty surprised at how civil Hama's response was (and I was also surprised that the letter was printed at all), although I think as the years wore on and he started getting more and more letters from proto-trolls his patience started to wear thin, some of his responses in later issues seemed a little testy. |

I don't know how much he remembers, but that would make for some interesting questions to ask him.

Do you think the final classic volume (possibly volume 16) will have the "extra credit" stuff in the back of the comics. Like the letters, profiles, maps of the Pitt, Cobra Island and the GI Joe chart for the Cobra Civil War (Marvel Issue 72-76)? The letters might have some problems, since they might not have the legalities of reproducing them, but the rest might be nice. ...and the yearbooks

The page count and price point are very linked, so it's always a matter of how much can we fit in without having to go up too much. That's the main reason. There's no legal reason that I know of (but maybe there would be on classic reprints). I put letters pages in the back of AVENGERS CLASSIC when I started that book at Marvel because I thought it was interesting to see letters that old and all that.
With the reprints of CLASSIC JOE, it would actually be even worse because we have to reconstruct the line art on each page and then have it recolored which is a pretty huge expense for pages that in all likelihood, wouldn't appeal to most fans. So, in this case it would be really expensive to produce them and it would raise the price of the book.... I'll second you on wanting the Yearbooks reprinted and collected in trade. And the Order of Battle mini-series as well. |

The last tradeback, number 16 would only have the 5 issues, so that would be a great opportunity to include the yearbooks at least, and the extras would be great.
I wonder why they don't include "hot potato" in the reprints of issue 1. Anybody know anything about that?

Maybe they can release all the missing back-up stories as a separate TPB of extras and assorted miscellania. Sort of like how Marvel compiled all the back-up stories from the Classic X-Men/X-Men Classic single issue floppies from back in the day and released them as a stand-alone TPB. |

It would be great if they did that, but since IDW also purchased the rights to the DDP Joe books, I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll fill out the last CLASSIC JOE trade with the first GIJOE Declassified mini-series, which is a direct continuation of issue #155 and could be used to bridge the continuity gap between the end of the Marvel series and the beginning of the IDW continuation of the Marvel/ARAH timeline.
