The motorcycle thing got me thinking that it would have made more sense/been better to make Sandstorm Budo (with some adjustments).
But I agree Loose. I take the Ninja Force guys and make 'em protection specialists.

Budo was always a favorite of mine, and as a kid I looked past the fact that he looked particularly out of place. I think a good way to redesign him (or Quick Kick) would be to give them fairly basic military garb, along with a Japanese style headband, and a sword, and a couple of knives.

We haven't spent much time talking about the guys from the 2000-2001ish period.
Double Blast, Wetdown, White-Out, Sidetrack, Crossfire, etc.. Crossfire is an interesting one. YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Crossfire Not much in the way of schooling or anything, but alot of personality. What are your takes on him?

Yeah, I thought PoC Quick-Kick was a bit of a missed opportunity on Hasbro's part. I mean, it's great that they finally gave him a gun, a shirt, and a pair of shoes, and I appreciated all the 1970s and 1980s pop culture nods (the Cobra Kai -- from The Karate Kid -- uniform, the Enter the Dragon-inspired kempo gloves, the Game of Death-inspired nunchuks) but I would've gone for something more similar to the get-up he wore in issue #61 of the Marvel comic book. Good thing his issue #61 look is pretty easy to kitbash... just put the Quick-Kick head on a wave 3 PoC Snake-Eyes body, the "turtleneck sweater collar" from Resolute Stalker/comic pack Beachhead (painted black, of course), and (although I haven't tried it yet to check if it fits) give him MU Luke Cage's watch cap/toque.

I thought Sidetrack (the second one, not the Ambush repaint) was weird, though. He's basically "White Stalker." He shares the same "job" of Ranger, has the same primary MOS (infantry) and he even has the same, and very particular to Stalker, paired secondary MOS (medic/interpreter). Heck, he even uses a repainted Stalker body. Alternatively, he can also be considered an enlisted version of Falcon, a "Sgt. Falcon," if you will, since Falcon is also another character seemingly built on the Stalker template (they -- Stalker and Falcon, I mean -- even speak the same four foreign languages, IIRC: Arabic, French, Spanish, and Swahili). Yeah, that would've worked too. Last edited by zuludelta; 04-29-2011 at 04:55 PM.. |

Also odd amongst that crop of filecards was Whiteout's. Hama was wise to sidestep any overt discussion of politics whenever he wrote the filecards, but the guys who wrote the one for Whiteout (it was written by a pair of guys whose names escape me now) were intent on presenting him as a "capital L" Libertarian.
The character's filename was based on that of Lee's Action Figure Times and News magazine publisher Leonard J. Lee III, so I don't know if it was a shout-out to the guy's actual political leanings. Last edited by zuludelta; 04-29-2011 at 05:39 PM.. |

I'd completely forgotten about those scenes, thanks for reminding me. /me wanders off to find that run of comics and have a read through |

Yeah, it wasn't a bad look for Snow-Job, either. Hasbro generally frowned on the practice by GI Joe comic book artists drawing them "out of uniform" though, but I liked it (the alternative is that we would get all sorts of ridiculous situations, like Torpedo raiding a Cobra warehouse in those early issues wearing flippers and a SCUBA mask, or Iceberg fighting in a tropical Southeast Asian jungle wearing arctic camo). |
