My point is, Budo's Primary MOS being listed as "Infantry" is a superfluous detail at best (for me, at least, and I imagine for a good many of the fans back in the day), when viewed in light of the toy design, how he was portrayed in the comics, or even with the rest of the text in his filecard (which talked almost exclusively about his "samurai-ness"). It could have been "Cavalry Scout" or "Counterintelligence Agent" or "Military Police" or "Combat Engineer" or most any other combat arms/combat support branch MOS and I don't think it would have significantly impacted my general impression of the character.
Hama often talked about struggling to come up with reasonable military functions for some of the more garish and outlandish Joe designs Hasbro sent him for filecard writing, and I think Budo was one of the cases where he just said "what the hell" and threw in "Infantry" for the character's MOS because it's the default setting, so to speak, and not because there's anything inherent in the design that lends itself to the infantry designation (the same could probably be said for Quick-Kick). I mean, is Budo being re-imagined as a Cavalry Scout or an MP (let's say he's an SRT guy, so he's an elite CQB/hostage-rescue cop) any harder to swallow than Low-Light being re-designated as a "SWAT sharpshooter" or Sci-Fi being tasked as a "Starfighter Pilot?" My final thoughts on Budo.. I liked the MP idea, it fits with his look in a way and character. Samurai were sworn to a Daimyo and were tasked with protecting and defending their lord, to an extent. So in a way that would work.
But I like moving him up the ladder to SRT/Hostage Rescue. Still along the same lines. I agree with Zulu about infantryman being the "default" setting Hama used. But thinking about it, and looking at the figure, how hard would it have been for Hasbro to take the Sandstorm/RAM set and make it Budo/RAM? Already got the base for the armor with the RIA top. The helmet could have been altered fairly easily to something more like Budo's original. Honestly, guys, what's the big deal about just accepting the filecard as it's written? Samurais don't fit in the U.S. military. He's an Infantryman with 3 hobbies: motorcycles, rock music, and his family's samurai heritage. He's good with a sword and can use that as a Hand-to-Hand instructor for the team when they're doing that kind of training. There's no advantage for a Special Ops team deploying an Operator dressed like a Samurai. What good would that do? What does that Accomplish? What possible mission would the Joes have when Hawk has to say, "Well, there's only one man who could complete this mission... A Samurai!" It's just not reasonable. Like Quick-Kick, he's dressed as an instructor in garrison, not in a uniform that he would be deployed in.

Nothing wrong with him being infantry. I just think it's a better use of him.
And his look just screams 'protection' to me.

How could that uniform be good for anything other than hand-to-hand training/instruction?

It's not good for hand-to-hand training either.
It's not good period. So I would do with him what I would do with QK and Raptor. Make a more functional uniform that carries over imagery from the vintage look.

My point is, if one were to try and bring Budo into the Modern Era, why not do so in a tragectory in a way that is in keeping with his Filecard? Why not make him an Infantry soldier who carries a sword? Samurai's were Warriors, not just bodyguards or policemen.

Well, it's your Joeverse.
I just like to try to keep as much of the continuity in my Joeverse as possible. We can always use a few more good Infantrymen.

When it's time for battle, Budo probably losses the Samurai crap and puts on his battle rattle like everyone else.
<snip> What possible mission would the Joes have when Hawk has to say, "Well, there's only one man who could complete this mission... A Samurai!" It's just not reasonable. Like Quick-Kick, he's dressed as an instructor in garrison, not in a uniform that he would be deployed in. Now issue #16 is a classic case of this (he does come out of a sewer iirc, but still fighting in a building seems to not require flippers and mask), and while in issue #25 (Zartan!) at least he doesn't have flippers, he still has a mask perched on top of his head, air tanks and a harpoon gun where really some jungle fatigues and a CAR-14 would surely be a better bet (Florida swampland.) At least we do finally see him (just about) in normal gear in issue #49 (Serpentor, the start of the Battle of Springfield) but it's a single pane and a side view with him sat behind a load of other team members. It was therefore refreshing (or rather a pleasant surprise - as I didn't read these till later on) to see Wet Suit (who might have suffered a similar battling-in-a-wetsuit sort of fate) in jungle fatigues in Special Missions #8, and we do see both Wet Suit and Torpedo in jungle fatigues (even if their hair colours are swapped) in Yearbook #4 (1988) which is nice. OTOH we see Torpedo revert to form (nearly) for the Last Stand sotryline of the pit being attacked by BATs in #131 (I say nearly because while he's wearing a wet suit in the PIT, in the middle of the desert, at least he has his head uncovered and is using a bullet-firing weapon) Anyway enough of my random uniform rant, just about staying on topic with Oliver's comment about Budo |

Actually in his one appearance Budo wore his samurai gear into the field.

I'm with Zulu on Budo. Infantry seem to be the almost throw-away MOS when Hama either didn't care or didn't think it was important. I really don't think his Infantry MOS was thought out much. I think Hand-to-Hand Instructor was thought out as a few of the Ninja Force guys are instructors of some kind, but what difference does it make and why is Nunchuk listed as Ordnance as his SMS?
I think we don't need to be convinced that it's INfantry or Nothing. But for me Infantry is an all encompassing MOS as it is. Guys who are Infantry spend all day basically POLICING Afghanistan and Iraq. MP/Security/Body Guard works for me as it is keeping with his Samurai-ness. Now I'm no where near the fan as Neuspeaq, but it's his Joeverse and we can rationalize our world anyway we like. I don't have much use for the Martial-Artist team members as just Martial Artists. I've tried to upgrade all to more Intelligence/Body Guards/ HUMIT types. Although most would still be listed as Infantry as an MOS if I recreated their filecards. Because they are not flying Skystrikers! Still if you're still willing to share Neuspeaq, I'd like to hear how else you've reinvented Budo, other than he's the best swordsman in the world. Have you promoted him? Does he team up with someone always? He was your 1st figure and you always liked him no matter what. I kind of like re-issuing the RAM with Budo Troy. I sometimes make guys with masks, Joes we're still missing. I might have to include a Budo soon. But now that Reactive armor may be a must for me.
