The closest Joe birthplace to my home right now would be Slipstream... he was born in Provo Utah, that would probably make him a mormon. Hehehe

At my house growing up, however, my mother always told us that all the G.I. Joes were Methodist like we were, so we should be like G.I. Joe and be excited to go to Church on Sunday. My mom would have been brilliant at Psy Ops. Even at that age I read Budo's file card and I wasn't fooled... and I knew Clutch wasn't going to worship on SUNDAY. It's funny to me that Joe never had a Chaplain figure, but there are a number of Joes whose secondary Military specialty is "Chaplain's Assistant". And the Original Pitt was so tied to the "Chaplain's Assistant School's Motor Pool". Still no Chaplain for the Joes. I always thought a good code name for a Chaplain would be: Shepard.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the Joes being front line soldiers and black ops, a chaplain wouldn't have worked? Chaplains aren't frontliners, right?

I would certainly have to agree with that one Troynos. I don't think they would work out to well being on missions with the Joes

The deal with Chaplains is one of the most deregulated areas in military service. By the book, most entry level Chaplains (Captain) work on a Battalion staff and have what we call "Free Range of the Battlefield". The only other person in the entire Battalion with that kind of ability to go anywhere they choose is the Battalion Commander, who is generally a Lt. Colonel. When a unit is deployed into Combat, that Chaplain goes with them... right into Combat, and the only person who can tell that Chaplain that he can't go somewhere with the unit is the Battalion Commander. In Iraq, where one of my best Chaplain friends is serving right now, he goes everywhere. He's assigned to the 101st Airborne; he goes everywhere with them. He goes anywhere soldiers need him. I've been on planes with Soldiers as they jumped out of C-130s, and Chaplains have been doing that since the 82nd and the 101st jumped into Normandy... and Chaplains jumped into Northern Iraq in 2003 with the 173rd Airborne and the Ranger Regiment. Chaplains stormed the beaches of Normandy too... getting shot at as they prayed for, and gave aid to soldiers. They served Communion on the hoods of jeeps in Vietnam - I met a Methodist Chaplain who did two tours of duty in 'Nam doing that. Something like 19 Chaplains have won the Medal of Honor. Not every Chaplain likes it on the front lines. Some prefer a desk. Again, it's the Chaplain's choice of where and how to serve. But the best Chaplains I know - the ones the soldiers go to when they need help - are right there with them. About 10% of all the Chaplains in the Army have a Ranger Tab. I've known two who were even Special Forces Qualified: real live Green Berets. A lot of Chaplains did something else in the Army first and became Chaplains later. Most of those guys were grunts of some kind and know how important it is to be there while the fighting is going on. At Ft. Bragg, all the Airborne Chaplains were called, "Shepherds of the Sky". I always thought that was nice. Sometimes a Shepherd has to get dirty in order to take care of his flock. The best Chaplains I know, and those who have been mentors for me, are the ones who go out with the Shooters. There's an old saying in the Army, "There are no atheists in foxholes." That's when they want and need a Chaplain. Hope that helps.

If Doc and Lifeline and the computer guys get to be Joes, there's room for a Chaplain - especially if he was a Ranger Chaplain.
