It's tricky when it comes to talking about Kwinn's military/paramilitary experience. IIRC, in his first appearance, Stalker read in Kwinn's dossier (printed out on Breaker's back-pack mounted wireless fax machine!!) that he had previously worked for the KGB, MI-6, the Mossad, and the CIA. That's pretty much the top four counterintelligence/paramilitary/special activities organizations of the Cold War era right there.
Did he have any conventional military training before he worked for the Big Four? That's something I don't think has ever been addressed in an official filecard or in any of the Marvel or DDP comics. But I'd assume he did... I don't think any of those agencies would have hired him if didn't have at least some military experience. Although it's up in the air where he got the experience. Is he American or Canadian? I don't think it was ever established, but in my head, I'd love it for him to have been a Canadian Ranger at some point earlier in his career, as it ties in with his ethnicity and all... by virtue of geography, the majority of Canadian Rangers are of Inuit/Esquimaux heritage, and are some of the best long range arctic surveillance troops this side of Denmark's Slædepatruljen Sirius. |

Now that you mention it, Kwinn's only file card lists his PMS as a freelance special ops enforcer and his SMS as a tracker. And he speaks 8 languages. He was born in Alaska, so I guess that makes him an American citizen. I wonder how they'll update his POC file card.

Ah, oh well, there goes my Canadian Ranger theory. Still, he must have had some military experience for him to have compiled such an impressive resumé working with the CIA, the KGB, and the Mossad. He doesn't strike me as just a plain criminal gun-for-hire and arctic guide.

Absolutely, he's not going to just get picked up by the CIA or whoever he worked for first because he was a "damned good woodsman" or something. He probably had American military training, possibly in intelligence, then went CIA, then moved onto other agencies as a freelancer, selling his trade to the highest bidder.

EDIT: not that I'm denigrating those jobs, mind you, the military needs all sorts of specialists to keep running, it's just that the irony in Kwinn's case would be welcome, since it seems like he's as much a "super-duper soldier" cliché as Snake-Eyes is the way he was written. ...or a "used car salesman" like Cobra Commander. Yeah, that would be funny, and, sadly, not too surprising.

I always thought Kwinn was Canadian, but maybe he worked in appliances at SEARS

Speaking of absurdities, the new POC Rock Viper got me curious about the old file card and when I read it I was struck by how ridiculous that bio was. Apparently the final test to become a Rock Viper consists of surviving a 250-foot fall. No test of skill or knowledge or anything useful, just your ability to withstand the impossible.
When the writer says, "only 50% will graduate," perhaps he meant those who were smart enough to let the other half of the class slide down the rope to their deaths. And those who could subtract and were still standing became Rock Vipers. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 04-21-2011 at 12:54 AM.. |

Nah. The 50% who die are the first ones to make the jump. The 50% who survive are the ones who use the bodies of the first 50% as landing cushions |

Yeah, the used car salesman origin for Cobra Commander in the comics sort of underwhelmed me after the initial amusement wore off. But I think it was part of the theme that Hama was trying to develop in the comics during the middle part of his run... Most "evil" in the world isn't the product of men who set out to do evil, more often than not, it's the product of people doing what they think is right and the whole thing getting out of hand and turning into a monster all its own. Remember, Cobra Commander started out as a man who "stood up for the little guy" who was fighting a society that he felt was conspiring to keep him and others like him down. I think Hama tried to make Cobra a composite of the worst aspects of 1970s and 1980s business culture... the whole "greed is good," and profit-above-everything, and pyramid scheme thing.
