Maybe anti-government or anti-establishment is a better word.
America would be at the top of their list of enemies, but it's not the only one. CC may have started out as anti-American government, but didn't take long to evolve from there. Majority of Cobra's schemes involved other countries and rarely were they directly involved in trying to do terrorist activities on American soil or direct threats to American citizens. In Wild Weasel's case, the majority of his missions would be on non-American targets. So being disillusioned with the American government and the actions he did at their command wouldn't translate well to doing the same things to others but under someone else's command. The more I think about it, the more I think someone like Wild Weasel is an action-junkie. He was in the USAF and found something he liked. Maybe he got discharged for being too agressive or not caring about friendly or non-combatant targets. He still felt the urge/need to fly combat missions so he found a substitute in Cobra, one that doesn't care about who he hits.

Anti-American has a specific meaning though (i.e. disliking America for whatever reason), and I don't think Cobra are anti-American per-se but rather a "generic" terrorist organisation.

I'd go with Zulu's explanation, but Oliver's works just as well. Wild Weasel is one of the most undeveloped characters in GIJoe. You'd have to think he must be one of the best pilots in the world, strictly from a fictional standpoint for his character. 2nd only to ACE.
So going down the list (I have a list handy based on my Cobraverse: Cobra Commander = yes or no but it would be cooler if he did Serpentor = sort of Destro = more than likely (0-10) Generals Overlord=yes DDP Tomax=yes Confirmed Xamot=yes Confirmed Gen. Mayhem= yes Confirmed (0-9) Lt. Generals Baroness =probably not Darklon=no indication, but possible Dr. Minbender=no Black Dragon=not that we know of Cesspool=not that we know of (0-8) Maj Generals Maj Gen Bludd=yes confirmed Voltar= has to be Storm Shadow=yes confirmed Dr. Venom=no Zartan=maybe Headman=no (0-7) Brig Generals Firefly=not that we know of Wild Weasel=has to be Alexander Destro=no Hannibal=sort of Interrogator=As a helicopter pilot I would say yes CLAWS Commander=yes confirmed (0-6)Colonels Mortal=no (although it would suit him since he's not a ninja) Scrap-Iron=not that we know of. Night Creeper Leader=no Gristle=no Red Laser=no Venomus Maximus=who cares Big Boa=Yes in IDW Overkill=yes as Robert Skelton (Correct me if I'm wrong) Scalpel=no (0-5) Lt. Colonels Guillotine=yes Snow Serpent Commander=Probably SkullBuster=Probably Cooperhead=quite possibly (DDP hints to yes) Zarana=no Lt Col Clay Moore=???I'd say yes Slice=no Rip It=no Crystal ball=no Escorpio Voador=no Neo-Viper Commander=???He should (0-4) Majors Zandar=no Dr. Knox=no Hotwire=no Skycreeper=no BLackout=yes Croc Master=no Raptor=no Metal-Head=no Neuro toxin=?no Razorclaw=?no GhostBear=no Coil Crusher=no, but as a former Jungle-Viper I'd lean more to yes Who'd I miss?

Or he was just really good at video games and he just had an inhuman nack for being a pilot....oh wait that is Ace. Asuming military trained may fit your Universe or your design. But the traveling carny style, stunt pilot fits mine just fine. He joined cobra because the USAF wouldn't let him in for psychological reasons and a drug/criminal history. I don't get to chime in much here. I miss you guys. I'll come back and edit this later to make it more coherent. No sleep = no sentense structure today.

Isn't it Wild Weasel's original filecard that saw action in the bush wars in Africa? I want to say that that would involve a lot of counter-insurgency type flying - perhaps in prop planes or fairly low-tech airframes. His code name indicates more of an US SEAD background - although they probably used it just because it sounds really badass.
As far as I know Wild Weasel was first used in the Vietnam era, but also since then. Not sure if they still use the term but there were certainly Wild Weaseal squadrons flying F-16s in the 80s and more recently. I don't think an A-10 (or logically the Rattler) is the ideal SEAD aircraft. I like the idea of WW as a US Vietnam-era fighter jock who found himself working as a merc in Africa in the 70s and 80s until Cobra picked him up. A more updated version might give him experience flying SEAD in Gulf War I and Bosnia, perhaps some work as a merc, and then joining Cobra more recently. |

From a motivational perspective, like say if you were writing a story of some sort, I think there's some sympathetic drama to be found in making Wild Weasel somebody who has wanted nothing more in life than to fly airplanes in a military context, someone who has become one of the best in his field, but who has had that taken away from him.
Maybe he had a serious injury or illness that necessitated being permanently grounded (it would explain his infamous vocal impediment noted in his filecard), and now his hubris and pride won't let him accept that he's no longer allowed, by legitimate military organizations at least, to fly. About 0.2% cent of all USAF pilots, navigators, and aircrew are permanently grounded every year for various medical and psychological conditions, some of them seemingly innocuous (to the average person, at least). IIRC, the most common diagnoses resulting in permanent flying status disqualification back in the 1990s were coronary artery disease, hypertension, chronic back pain and disk abnormalities, recurrent migraine headaches, diabetes mellitus, and substance/alcohol abuse. And the disqualification rates were much much higher during the 1980s, something like 4% (probably an indication of just how much better people are taking care of themselves these days). Maybe he got diagnosed with one or a combination of those issues. So now that he's had the one thing that gives him joy taken away from him, he's resorted to working for mercenary organizations and tinpot dictatorship governments who may not have the USAF's strict health and wellness policy when it comes to retaining pilots for military duties. |

Well, if you want to count "named" Cobras who never made it into toy form, Cobra Admiral George Latimer (from the Sunbow cartoon episode Sink the Montana!) was a former US Navy captain and a contemporary of Hawk's. And Buck McCann (the head instructor of Cobra's CEC Academy, as seen in the Sunbow episode The Rotten Egg) was a former Marine who trained under Leatherneck.

A guy like Wild Weasel likely doesn't see himself as a terrorist. Being a mercenary pilot, he probably sees himself as being in a legitimate private military aviator profession, and rationalizes his choice of employer via all sorts of moral and ethical mental gymnastics (if he even cares to rationalize any ethical or moral concerns away... I imagine he's one of those pilot-obsessives who just likes to fly and shoot and doesn't really care about the ramifications of the jobs he signs up for... he's not "capital E" evil, but at the same time, he doesn't really care if he's killing innocents or committing crimes in the course of flying for Cobra, as long as he gets to do what he loves and get paid handsomely for it).
As for Firefly, I'd think he'd have to have some military training to be an expert in demolitions. Sure he could learn some rude techniques for constructing IEDs or whatever, but nothing too sophisticated, nothing that would land him a good job with Cobra. He'd need a reputation, technical experience or military credentials of some sort. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 04-20-2011 at 11:51 PM.. |
