And since we're on the topic of Destro, one of my pet peeves with comics and filecard writers who use him is when they refer to his real name as "James McCullen Destro XXIV."
He isn't James XXIV. That would mean he's the 24th person in his hereditary line to carry the name James. It's not possible. The first James McCullen Destro lived during the mid-18th century (he's cited by Hawk as being alive in 1752 in GI Joe #57 during a mission briefing). There can't have been 24 generations of James McCullen Destros between 1752 and whenever the current Destro was born (let's say mid-20th century). That would place less than eight years between the birth of each Destro! Sure, it could happen if you allow for siblings or cousins sharing the name, but I think the "spirit" of the convention is that it's a single hereditary line thing. What Hama actually wrote (when he first went into Destro's family history in-depth) is that the current Destro is the 15th (not the 24th) Earl of Destro. That means he's the 15th person since 1752 to head the Destro household (but that doesn't mean he's the 15th person in his line to carry the name James McCullen Destro, he's just the 15th lord of the manor since 1752). I don't know if Destro did any actual military service. If he did, it wasn't on the frontlines. I can see him going to an officer school and being assigned a nice and safe job because of his status.
In fact, I see very few of the named Cobras (exception of Bludd) as having did frontline duty in any kind of organized military. I see some of them having served in cartels, merc groups, etc.. but really don't see many having formal training. The rank and file will have, as well as the troop leaders, but the named Cobras.. not so much... Guys that came from the rank and file, like Gallows/Guilltine, would have.

What about the Action Force guys? Skip, Eagle, Dolphin, Jammer, Gaucho etc..
And the Argen 7? Shimik, Topson, Glenda, etc.. How do you work them into your Joeverse?

Right now I don't really use either but I'm more interested in working in the AF characters than the A7.

I imagine they may recruit certain indigenous peoples who grew up firing AK-47s, but the commanders would have to be more than just used car salesmen. Baroness another story, but Wild Weasel wouldn't know how to fly attack aircraft unless he was military. Copperhead maybe not, but the possiblity of a SEAL background in Phoenix guard was pretty cool. SCrap-Iron could be either way.

Bludd, Voltar, Wild Weasel would all have military backgrounds.
Baroness, CC, Scrap-Iron, Mindbender, Firefly, Storm Shadow (ignoring the SE connections, which are different in my Joeverse) don't necessarily have to. Copperhead could or could not, depends. Zarana = no. Overlord depends on how use him.

Wild Weasel for sure. Nobody becomes a professional mercenary attack/fighter pilot by practicing on civilian aircraft... those skills are something you can only learn in the military. Besides, his code-name already hints at him having Vietnam War experience... "Wild Weasel" was the nickname given to F-4 Phantom and F-105 Thunderchief jets that were used on SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) missions. It was also the unofficial nickname given to the F-4 Phantom pilots of the 35th Fighter Wing who specialized in SEAD tactics during the Vietnam War.
