Well I'm still happy to have never seen the cartoon, I've no idea what damage it would do to me to hear voices that aren't the same as the ones I used in my head while reading the comic and playing with the figures. Add to that the differences in the actual personalities portrayed and I think I'll continue to steer clear ;)

Yeah, I imagine to somebody who didn't grow up watching the cartoon, watching the old Sunbow cartoon doesn't really have any special appeal. It was well done for its time, but I can see it being hard to ignore the technical deficiencies endemic to many 1980s weekly serial cartoons if you're not watching it with a heavy helping of nostalgia.
Funny story: I used to do "Beatles voices" when I played with my Dreadnoks (this was before I'd heard them talk in the cartoons). Being eight years old and not really having heard much in the way of Australian accents, I just assumed that they talked like the Beatles did in the Yellow Submarine animated movie that I used to watch over and over. |

Actually, now that I think about it, Torch and Ripper didn't talk with Australian accents in the old Sunbow cartoons... they sounded more like they spoke with poorly done Cockney accents.

Going back to Firefly for a moment. (I was on a plane all day yesterday so I missed a few pages.)
Even though there is the French background to his character, I'm more inclined to do without using it to help add a military background. Like you said Troy, I think his ninja training would cover most of his skills. The Explosive\Demolition stuff could have been learned some other way. Sure the Ninja Connection with SE and SS was sort of a lame twist, but I think it was more due to execution than the serendipitous\inbred nature of the tie-in. I mean the Flying Red Ninja SCorpion Cheerleader Pose was more of a jump the shark moment than any.

There are things in the cartoon that, in retrospect, seem even odder. For example, what was the thinking that went into the decision to make Spirit and Storm-Shadow as each other's nemesis when the Snake-Eyes/Storm-Shadow opposition seems to be built into their respective designs? Why was Hawk non-existent in the first season of the cartoon (replaced instead by "Colonel Sharpe")?
With Hawk, I think you were right about the similarities between Hawk, Duke and Short-Fuze getting him replaced. Grunt, Zap, and Grand Slam were basically non-existent. Breaker, Steeler, Short-Fuze and Covergirl had design changes to keep them from being confused with other characters or the greenshirts. Quote:
There's also a certain quality to the voices on the show. When I read the comics, I hear the voices from the cartoon. Obviously, some of the voices don't make sense. Bazooka's voice was mentioned above, Destro's cartoon voice never made any sense, and I never understood some of the accents that the Joe team members had... but there's no way to change the way they sound in my head - it's like it was programmed in there by hundreds of hours of TV when I was a child.

I can't watch the Sunbow stuff anymore. Too cheesy. But it's got a fond place in my memories.
Comic > Cartoon though, even as a kid.

IIRC the story was that Hama, prior to the release of the Baroness figure in 1984, had always written the character of the Baroness thinking that she was a product of the spoiled American bourgeoisie who had joined Cobra as a way to piss off her rich parents and upper-class society in general (think of her as a combination of Patty Hearst and the "Hanoi Jane" version of Jane Fonda). Hasbro liked how Hama wrote the character and Herb Trimpe's design for her in the very first issue of the Marvel comic book (this was in 1982) that they adapted the character for use in the first GI Joe mini-series (first broadcast in 1983). The character became so popular that Hasbro decided to make a figure of her for the 1984 wave of releases (she was the first GI Joe character to appear in the comic book first, and as a toy second, all the other early Joe characters were designed as toys first and adapted for use in the comics by the comic book's creative team). When it came time for Hama to write the toy's filecard, he was surprised to find that the character spoke with an "Eastern European" accent in the animated references he was forwarded. Anyway, he ended up putting in the European background in the filecard, to align the toy version (and eventually the comic book version) with how the writers of the MASS Device mini-series interpreted her origins. I doubt if the guys who wrote/casted/produced RoC knew this "secret history" of the character, though. It's more likely that they just wanted Sienna Miller (who's English, BTW) to speak with an American accent for the role to make the dialogue more accessible to American audiences, even if it contradicts the source material (anybody who's worked on a large commercial film or video game project is probably familiar with this way of thinking by producers). |

Well i for one enjoy her Eastern Eropean background since it opens up the possibilities for many more probabilities. Spoiled rich girl has been done before, but now she can have ties to so much more plus it helps Cobra lift off internationally.
I wonder when she and the Commander Hooked up? It was never mentioned, but he always seemed jealous of Destro. But since she was a part of Cobra so early on I think it would be inevitable that they would have. Not that I'm trying to write anything that isn't there or is even that important. ROC blows that away making them siblings, which works as well, but I prefer here Aristocratic Heritage by birth and not marriage.

We're down to picking apart the voices from the cartoon - that is totally attacking our childhoods. ;)

Ok, here's a "behind-the-scenes" filecard nugget that I don't think has been mentioned yet (although it's probably of interest only to martial arts enthusiasts):
In Torpedo's original filecard, it mentions that he's a black belt in kenpo (along with Wushu, Goju-ryu karate, and being an expert in the use of the balisong). In an interview with Mark Bellomo, Hama expanded on Torpedo's kenpo training. Turns out that he wanted to write that Torpedo specifically practiced Shorinji Kempo (which is basically Nippon-ized Shaolin kung-fu... the Japanese characters for writing "Shorinji Kempo" and "Shaolin kung-fu" are actually the same). Now, here's the martial arts nerd part: Shorinji Kempo doesn't actually award black belts. They award arm bands (and none of them in the colour of black) to indicate progression in the art (and yeah, there are no coloured belts in wushu either). Anyway, for the longest time, I thought the kenpo reference in Torpedo's filecard was a nod to Hawaiian kenpo, a.k.a. American kenpo (y'know, since Torpedo's from Hawaii and all). |
