Firefly, to me, has always been one of those guys whose appeal is the mystery around them. The more we learned about his past in the comics, the less interested in him I became. Always preferred the mysterious demolitions expert angle, rolled my eyes when it was revealed that he was another ninja with ties to Snake-Eyes, Storm-Shadow, and Zartan... one of the few times (maybe the only time) where I preferred the Sunbow cartoon depiction of a character over the Marvel comics one.

Yes. When he was "Cobra's Boba Fett", that's when he was truly awesome. I also think SE lost a bit of his appeal over time. Conventional wisdom would have it that this is just due to over exposure in the comic. But I think his increasingly complex back story took away from the mystery that made him really unique to begin with.
Curiously I don't think SS suffers so much from the over-exposure of his background stuff (though certainly from general over-exposure), but perhaps that's because his character is fundamentally more complex so retains some mystery. Firefly could be even more complex, but the ninja exposure and subsequent rubbish story line really killed the character for me (the first was not needed, the second was just really quite rubbish unfortunately). Such a shame, I still look back at storylines like "The Mountain!" (containing both SE and Firefly) with fond memories though. |

SE was great when he was the guy that wore black and didn't talk. Once started wrapping everyone around him it got bad. Declassified just took bad to a whole new level.
SS's revealed background worked because he was the polar opposite of SE. Also, SS's character was tied intricately to his background. He wouldn't be SS without it.

I did like the way Hama revealed bits and pieces of Wolverine's origin. He still kept the "what is really going on" edge to it.
Not like the crap that Marvel just pulled.

Still Fireflies military experience has never been revealed. Would he even had any time for military experience before the death of Hard Master? I guess. Snake-Eyes Ninja training seem to go too fast to be realistic. It's like he became a ninja in 2 semesters. Okay i'll concede it must have been a 3 year period. (Still a little fast) Firefly was presumably already a ninja for some time when he came to visit the Arashikage clan.
This is where I get confused. It seems like Firefly's grandfather was a Grand Master of the Koga Clan. His father hooks up with a French Woman I suppose during WWII and Firefly is born. Japanese military after WWII sort of took a nosedive, so I guess at some point he felt obligated to perform military duties like SS, but my guess would be French Foreign Legion? Although I'm not sure what conflicts the French participated in after Vietnam and they were out too Early for Firefly not to be a 70 year old.

However, the Foreign Legion is very well-trained group... he wouldn't have had to have had combat experience with the FFL in order to have recieved the demolitions/combat training.

Agree that a French Foreign Legion background for Firefly works out very well, given that he grew up in the former French Indochina. I can see him being a member of one of their elite para-commando groups.
From what I understand, his father (or was it grandfather?) was an Imperial Japanese Army soldier who took part in the Indochina campaign and decided to marry a local (maybe a French expat?) and stay in French Indochina after Japan's defeat in WWII. I don't think it's ever been made clear whether Firefly was born during World War II or a few years after WWII (my bet's on the latter). Quote:

I think shift his timeline, much like the Joes have been in various media, and make him part of the French Foreign Legion in the first Gulf War.
But I don't think Firefly necessarily needs military training. If use him as a pure saboteur that's stuff he could have picked up at any numerous terrorist camps and just had a knack for it. I don't think he's ever demonstrated formal military training. It would make him a tougher opponent, but I don't think it's essential to him.
