I don't really know who was at fault there, whether the initial character designs by Rudat just seemed too similar (both were blonde, square-jawed, Caucasian types) or penciler Mike Vosburg (who drew most of the Duke-centric early issues) just didn't draw them differently enough. And then there was that weird stretch in the comics when Hawk was already being drawn with his v2 outfit (the bomber jacket/Patton look), but the colorists were still coloring his hair blonde (as in the original toy), instead of the "new" brown-haired 1986 version. I wonder if anybody back in the day ever tried to get a No-Prize by explaining the hair colour change? |

One thing I've always been curious about, but has never been addressed AFAIK by anyone working with Hasbro or Sunbow at the time, was why it was decided to replace Hawk with the glasses-wearing "Colonel Sharpe" as the commander of the Joe team in the early cartoons. Hawk didn't even appear in the cartoon until the 2nd season (1986). Were they concerned that kids wouldn't be able to tell Duke and the original Hawk design apart?

Heh. Remember the old letters pages in the comics? It seemed like every month there'd be a letter from a kid asking which guy was Hawk and which guy was Duke (obviously, you wouldn't confuse one for the other if they were being referred to by name or if they were in the same panel, but by themselves, and with Hawk occasionally drawn wearing olive drab BDUs, it could get a little confusing).

I figured Hawk just got sick of dying his hair and reverted back to his natural brown.
As for Duke, I've always felt he embodied the 1SG really well but since that billet demands a lot of administrative work, he's not really out there on the front lines a lot so he's never really hogging the spotlight in my joeverse. Stalker feels more like ideal Squad Leader for recon or even a Platoon Sgt type. And Duke always projected the image of thirty-something year old so for me age never conflicted with his rank. |

So, I started reading this thread one time and got to page 87, and gave up. I did a search but didn't see anything about my favorite character, Firefly. So I decided I'd add in some tidbits of info that I gleaned from reading all of hos filmcards one night when I got bored.
1. He is an expert rifleman. Not sure if I remeber the exact verbiage, but it made it sound like he was a great shot, maybe even like a sniper. 2. He's a rock climber. Can scale a wall with the best of them. Now I feel good for contributing to this monumental thread.

Unfortunately we spend most of our time discussing Joe file cards since they usually have the most details and merit the most discussions but Cobra file cards are in much need of extrapolation. From his original file card we know he's an expert in "NATO and Warsaw explosives and detonators." The interesting question is where did he get his training? US military? Foreign military? Both? He's obviously a mercenary but for whom did he work before Cobra and who recruited him? He must also have extensive training in recon, intelligence, or related fields since his infiltration skills are so superb. |

Firefly, to me, has always been one of those guys whose appeal is the mystery around them. The more we learned about his past in the comics, the less interested in him I became. Always preferred the mysterious demolitions expert angle, rolled my eyes when it was revealed that he was another ninja with ties to Snake-Eyes, Storm-Shadow, and Zartan... one of the few times (maybe the only time) where I preferred the Sunbow cartoon depiction of a character over the Marvel comics one.

And I've got the wiki thing filed away in the back of my head for use later on

Same with Sparks. He was in the MASS Device as the "base guy", which is how I think most of us end up using him in our Joe-verses. But where did he come from? Who created him? Why was he created and used and not Breaker?
